But who will advance?

ATP Mallorca Day 2 Predictions

Ethan Quinn vs Valentin Royer

Head-to-Head: Royer 1-0 Quinn

Ethan Quinn has adapted well to grass this season. The American earned one of the biggest wins of his career by upsetting Karen Khachanov in Halle before pushing eventual finalist Alexander Bublik in a competitive second-round defeat. His powerful forehand and willingness to step inside the baseline make him well suited to quicker conditions, and his confidence has clearly grown over the past few weeks.

Valentin Royer is enjoying the best season of his career, having broken into the Top 100 after a string of strong Challenger results. However, grass remains his least experienced surface, and he is still learning how to maximize his game on it. Although he owns a previous hard-court win over Quinn, the conditions in Mallorca should favour the American’s more aggressive style.
Prediction: Quinn in 2

Fabian Marozsan vs Alex Molcan

Head-to-Head: First meeting

Fabian Marozsan remains one of the more dangerous shot-makers outside the seeded players, but consistency has continued to elude him this season. He did record a first-round win in Halle before falling to Tomas Machac, showing flashes of the aggressive tennis that has troubled top players in the past. His flat groundstrokes can be particularly effective on grass when he finds his rhythm.

Alex Molcan has worked his way through qualifying in Mallorca, a positive sign after spending much of the past year trying to rebuild his ranking following injuries. While he is naturally more comfortable on clay, his movement and defensive skills have helped him adjust reasonably well this week.

This looks like a close contest, but Marozsan’s greater ability to finish points quickly could prove decisive on grass.
Prediction: Marozsan in 3

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBauyFmNnw" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4010px; aspect-ratio: 4010/2673;" ></smartframe-embed>

Nick Kyrgios vs Adam Walton

Head-to-Head: First meeting

Nick Kyrgios returns to one of his favorite parts of the season. The Australian remains a dangerous grass-court player thanks to one of the biggest serves in tennis and his ability to shorten points. Injuries have severely limited his appearances over the past two years, and he has played only a handful of matches this season, but grass has always brought out his best tennis.

Adam Walton has quietly put together a solid year, earning opportunities at ATP level through consistent Challenger performances. He is comfortable on faster courts and possesses a reliable serve, though he lacks the outright firepower of his compatriot.

If Kyrgios is physically able to maintain his level throughout the match, his serve and first-strike tennis should give Walton few opportunities to dictate.
Prediction: Kyrgios in 2

Main Photo Credit: Mike Frey-USA TODAY Sports

The first round continues at the Mallorca Championships with several intriguing contests featuring players at very different stages of their grass-court campaigns.
