Losing the two-time defending champion is a significant blow to the Championships, and his electrifying style of play will be missed at SW19. The 23-year-old Spaniard has not played since the Barcelona Open in April due to a right wrist injury, and despite reporting progress in his recovery, he ultimately concluded he was not sufficiently fit to compete on the grass-court swing.

Lorenzo Musetti announced on Instagram his decision to not compete because of a rectus femoris injury. This problem already forced him to miss the French Open. The No. 15, who reached semifinals at the All-England Club in 2024, has not played since a fourth-round loss to Casper Ruud at the Italian Open in May.

Sebastian Korda began the season in fine form, claiming his third ATP singles title at the Delray Beach Open before beating Alcaraz at the Miami Open, but unraveled in his very next match against Martin Landaluce, where he was visibly struggling with a back problem. He has not played a competitive match since. This is the second consecutive year he has been unable to compete at the tournament, having also been out of last year’s edition with a right shin injury.

Tomas Machac withdrawal completes a painful picture for former top 20 players. The Czech did compete at the French Open but fell in the second round to eventual champion Alexander Zverev. He subsequently revealed on Instagram that a tear in his left foot had not healed sufficiently, ruling him out of the grass swing. His focus has now turned to retiring to the American hard court summer.

Arthur Cazaux had managed just two tour-level matched in the early part of the season. He has now announced on social media that he has undergone surgery on his right elbow at a clinic in Bordeaux. He is targeting a return to action in approximately six months.

Valentin Vacherot rounded out the men’s list. The Monaco-based Frenchman and reigning Shanghai Masters champion has also been forced out, sidelined by a stress fracture in his foot accompanied by bone oedema.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBxsg1R7v7" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 7328px; aspect-ratio: 7328/4885;" ></smartframe-embed>

Which Women Withdrew?

On the WTA side, Victoria Mboko was the highest-profile absentee. The World No. 9 and one of the most exciting young players on tour was ruled out after sustaining an MCL injury to the left knee during the HSBC Championship at Queens. The 19-year-old Canadian had been in high spirits during the week, partnering Serena Williams to her first-ever doubles match win at the tournament, before a fall in her singles match cut her grass season short.

She is joined on the sidelines by Hailey Baptise (World No. 30), Varvara Gracheva (World No. 71), Sonay Kartal (World No.72), and Veronika Kudermetova (World No. 86).

Who Replaced Those Players on the Main Draw?

Jan Choinski was given an opportunity due to Alcaraz’s decision to withdraw. Matteo Berrettini, who was ranked outside the Top 100 when Wimbledon’s initial entry list was locked in, gained direct entry into the main draw following a quarterfinal run at the French Open, benefiting directly from Musetti’s absence.

Alexander Muller replaced Korda, while Jesper de Jong–who reached the fourth round at the French Open as a lucky loser–steps in for Machac. Sho Shimabukuro takes Cazaux’s spot and Alex Molcan replaces Vacherot.

In the women’s draw, Darja Vidmanova replaced Mboko, Hanne Vandewinkel steps in for Baptiste, and Sinja Kraus replaces Gracheva.

The former World No.2, Paula Badosa, will take Kartal’s place. The Spaniard recently retired before her qualifying match Bad Homburg and is now looking forward to Wimbledon. Lastly, Francesca Jones replaced Kudermetova.

The 139th edition of the Championship gets underway on June 29th, though the draw has already been significantly reshaped.

Main Photo Credit: Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

With less than two weeks until the first ball is struck at the third Grand Slam of the season, Wimbledon has been battered by a mounting injury crisis across both the men’s and women’s draws. 11 Players Withdraw from Wimbledon Which Men Withdrew?
