After days of speculation, Wimbledon <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Wimbledon\/status\/2068766175018754128?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confirmed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the most prevalent theory: Serena Williams will be making her comeback in singles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2026\/06\/16\/serena-and-venus-williams-reunite-for-wimbledon-doubles-as-legendary-partnership-returns\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">set to play doubles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/category\/wimbledon\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Wimbledon<\/a> with her sister, Venus Williams, as part of her larger comeback this grass season. Serena has played two doubles matches this month, the first being a win at Queen\u2019s Club with Victoria Mboko and the second a loss in Berlin alongside Karolina Muchova. Now, she\u2019s taking on both disciplines at the Grand Slam she\u2019s won the most across both singles and doubles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last time Serena took to the court solo was at the 2022 US Open, which at the time was her retirement tournament. There, Serena won two matches before falling in three sets to Ajla Tomljanovic, marking what was her last time playing professional tennis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the two doubles matches she\u2019s played, Serena has of course shown rust, but the game that\u2019s made her one of the greatest tennis players of all time is still very much there, and she can cause a huge shakeup in the draw\u2014especially on the grass of Wimbledon, where she\u2019s won seven times and made four additional finals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"6dfbdbe8ed6ff2eb8f8e8ee3c2cef8f4\" image-id=\"wennZF96NK4E\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3375px; aspect-ratio: 3375\/5220;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serena\u2019s mentality in her comeback has been a strong asset so far and will certainly help as she steps out on court at Wimbledon once again. In a press conference at Queen\u2019s Club, Serena <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/48992234\/serena-williams-queens-return-dont-need-win-unsure-playing-singles-again\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that she has \u201c won more than most people have in their whole lives, so (winning) is not that important to me\u201d. That could very well be the difference-maker in her matches, as her opponents will no doubt feel some pressure at facing Serena.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her opponents in both singles and doubles won\u2019t be known until the draws are finalized in the upcoming week, but whoever she faces will have a real challenge on their hands.
