It was an anticlimactic ending to what had been a thrilling week for Montgomery, but the result is no less significant. The 484th-ranked American had entered the tournament as a qualifier and produced a string of impressive performances to reach the final, making it impossible to view the title as anything but earned.<\/p>\n

Robin Montgomery Claims Maiden WTA Title<\/h2>\n

Montgomery’s route to Sunday’s decider was nothing short of sensational. She came through three rounds in the main draw, defeating Ukrainian Daria Snigur, Belgian Greet Minnen<\/a>, and Australian Daria Kasatkina before dispatching Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4 6-2 in the semifinals. Montgomery, a Washington D.C. native, cracked the Top 100 for the first time last June before stepping away from the tour for eight months following a wrist procedure. She had reached a career-high ranking of 95th in June 2025 before the injury derailed her season entirely.<\/p>\n

After undergoing wrist surgery in the second half of last year, the 21-year-old has played herself into form on the same grass court surface that cut her 2025 campaign short. This week’s title in ‘s-Hertogenbosch closes that circle in the most emphatic way possible.<\/p>\n

On the other side of the net, Krejcikova’s withdrawal was a blow to what had been an equally compelling week for the Czech. The 30-year-old had navigated her half of the draw without dropping a set and was chasing her first title of 2026. It was also her first tour-level final since she lifted the Wimbledon trophy in 2024. Krejcikova, who also won the French Open in 2021, was seeded eighth for the tournament and had been in sharp form ahead of her grass-court Grand Slam title defence.<\/p>\n

The gulf in experience between the two finalists had been enormous on paper. Krejcikova brought two Major titles and years of big-match pedigree into the weekend. Montgomery brought momentum, and the sort of quiet confidence that only comes from winning when nobody expects it. It would have been a fascinating contest. In the end, illness had the final word.<\/p>\n

Robin Montgomery now heads to the All England Club<\/a> with a title, a ranking boost, and a week’s worth of proof that she belongs among the game’s best on grass. For a player who spent the better part of a year watching from the sidelines, that is more than enough.<\/p>\n
