As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the slate, including Frances Tiafoe vs Daniel Altmaier, but who will book their spot in the second round?

ATP Stuttgart Day 2 Predictions

Roberto Bautista Agut vs Marcos Giron

Head-to-head: Bautista Agut 3-0 Giron

Roberto Bautista Agut has featured in two main draws in Stuttgart, but it was over a decade ago when he won the tournament. Back then, it was held on clay, but the Spaniard’s – unlike many of his countryman – has an excellent record on grass. Indeed, it is arguably his strongest surface with Bautista Agut a former-Wimbledon semifinalist. With confirmation that this will be his final season, Bautista Agut is making one last stop in Stuttgart. Although age has taken a little of the sting out of his baseline patterns, his game should still translate nicely onto grass because of his precise ball striking. And he’s got a perfect record against Marcos Giron.

Prediction: Bautista Agut in 3

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBElhddNIx" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3786px; aspect-ratio: 3786/2525;" ></smartframe-embed>

Quentin Halys vs Sho Shimabukuro

Head-to-head: Halys 1-0 Shimabukuro

Sho Shimabukuro is on the verge of breaking into the top 100 with the Japanese taking a major step at the weekend when he won two qualifying matches without dropping a set to reach the ATP Stuttgart main draw, backing up his quarterfinal run at the Birmingham Challenger in the process. Shimabukuro’s speed around the court can frustrate the big servers, but Halys is built for the grass-court swing and should be able to rely on his serve to win him plenty of free points. Shimabukuro should be able to keep this close, but the Frenchman’s will likely have too much for him in the end.

Prediction: Halys in 3

James Duckworth vs Diego Dedura

Head-to-head: first meeting

For a player of James Duckworth’s pedigree on grass, last season’s first-round defeat to 18-year-old Justin Engel at the ATP Stuttgart Open was one of the most surprising results in the tournament – maybe even the grass-court swing. Notwithstanding that loss, Duckworth’s comfort on this surface should not be understated, particularly against this opposition. Diego Dedura has enjoyed an encouraging rise in the past two years, with a top 250 spot within reach – but he has little grass-court pedigree. This wild card will give him valuable experience for his first professional match on grass but Duckworth’s higher ceiling makes him a heavy favoyrite.

Prediction: Duckworth in 2

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBFaCe1AML" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 8036px; aspect-ratio: 8036/4923;" ></smartframe-embed>

Nick Kyrgios vs Corentin Moutet

Head-to-head: first meeting

Nick Kyrgios has barely played over the last three years. His only singles appearance of 2026 was a first-round defeat to Aleksandar Kovacevic in Brisbane. After such a lengthy absence and with limited match play, there are obvious question marks about his fitness. But grass should be the equalizer for him. Kyrgios can generate effortless power from his serve and dictate rallies. Corentin Moutet is a creative player with almost every trick shot up his sleeve, yet he generally prefers longer exchanges. That’s where the Frenchman can disrupt rhythm. That said, if Kyrgios moves reasonably well and serves anywhere near his usual level, he could secure a win on his return.

Prediction: Kyrgios in 3

Main photo credit: Mike Frey-USA TODAY Sports

It promises to be an entertaining day of tennis at the ATP Stuttgart Open with a former Wimbledon finalist (and a former semifinalist) in action in Germany.
