If you didn’t already know, you would never guess him for an American tennis player. Quite frankly, his style is the antithesis of what the U.S. tennis machine has churned out over time, unlike that of his compatriots, whose games revolve around big serves and massive forehands.

Tien, in many ways, is a fascinating throwback to a highly tactical, hyper-efficient brand of tennis. His methods revolve around a workmanlike approach to every point, making him tailor-made for the grinding nature of tennis in general and clay-court tennis in particular, and making him a true all-court player, unlike most of his countrymen.

Learner Tien A Future French Open Champion In The Making

Learner Tien: The Story

Powering this relentlessness is a highly efficient tennis IQ mind. The American is one of the most patient players on tour, ready to put in the hard miles while counting on his incredible point-construction abilities and consistency to yield dividends eventually. His patient approach generally culminates in his opponents making errors from a combination of exhaustion and frustration, or the American capitalizing on the right opening to end the point.

You throw in that he is a lefty, making him an even trickier proposition for many players on tour, and you have one heck of a player. In many ways, he treats the tennis court like a chessboard, and on this board, he calls most of the shots. He demonstrated this doggedness in his second-round match, beating the Argentine Facundo Diaz Acosta, a seasoned clay-court player–who himself isn’t too dissimilar to Tien in how he plays–in five competitive sets and impressively doing so in the same conditions that led to Jannik Sinner’s downfall.

Even before now, there was already ample evidence of his resilience. As Daniil Medvedev -arguably the tour’s most seasoned disciple of this dogged approach- found the young American a nightmare to play against on several occasions. The American beat Medvedev in the last two Australian Opens, on a surface Medvedev prides himself on, by beating the Russian at his own game. Following his latest defeat to Learner Tien in January, Medvedev had this to say:

“He played great, super-aggressive. Even when I was making good shots, he was making a better shot back,” Medvedev said. “I didn’t find many solutions today on the court, which is rare, and I didn’t feel that many times in my life like this.

Rising To The Occasion

A dive into the data in the match against Diaz Acosta captures perfectly what Medvedev felt that day, whilst still highlighting why the rigorous nature of clay suits Tien well. Against Diaz Acosta, the short rallies (1-4 shots) were dominated by the Argentine, who won an outstanding 90 to Tien’s 73. The medium rallies (5-8 shots) were basically even, with Diaz Acosta slightly ahead at 54-52. However, as the points got longer (over 9 shots), it was Tien who flipped the script, leading 39-24. Basically, the longer the point went on, the likelier it was to favour Tien. Against a seasoned clay-courter like Diaz Acosta, these are impressive numbers, especially in sweltering conditions.

Now the young American finds himself in the third round, in what is only his second jab at the French Open, having made his tournament debut last season. A title in Geneva, coming into this, further emphasizes his growing clay-court pedigree. The feeling is that the five-set format of Roland Garros favors him even more, offering him ample time to settle into matches and a chance to utilize his superior conditioning and understanding of the game to out-grind and outlast most opponents.

While his game is generally rock-solid, there are still aspects that need fine-tuning and could certainly be improved. Take, for instance, his serve. Despite it not being a weakness, it remains below par, at best a functional shot that serves more as an effective but hardly threatening point starter. It lends to the American having to win almost every point via exchanges instead of picking up a few free points. However, still aged 20 until December, there is plenty of time and room for improvement, especially under the guidance and tutelage of Michael Chang, a former French Open winner himself; his serve and other aspects of his game are almost certain to improve.

Destiny On The Cards

The French Open historically rewards players who are, first and foremost, ready to suffer and fight for every point, as if their lives depended on it. A look at some of the players with the most French Open wins in recent times, since the Open Era, illustrates this point. Rafael Nadal, of course, who was the epitome of slugging it out on clay, leads the way with 14 titles. And with players like Novak Djokovic, who won three titles, and Carlos Alcaraz, who already has two, you begin to appreciate the value of players capable of a proper fight to the finish here at the French Open. Jannik Sinner’s dramatic wilting also lends itself to the argument.

What Sinner’s exit also does is open an enticing passageway for all the players on this side of the draw to stake a claim, with both Djokovic and Alexander Zverev on the other side. Tien has the tools to make the most of this opportunity. A deep run here by Tien won’t surprise most who have been watching keenly. Ultimately, it is probably too soon for him to win the French Open. But if the day comes when Learner Tien holds the Coupe des Mousquetaires aloft in victory in the French capital, then it really shouldn’t surprise anyone, as he was tailor-made for this very competition.
