But who will advance?

WTA Rome Day 1 Predictions

Martina Trevisan vs Talia Gibson

Head-to-Head: First meeting

Trevisan’s best tennis was built on clay — a Rabat title and Roland Garros semifinal in 2022 remain the high-water mark of her career. Since then, injuries have been cruel, culminating in foot surgery in early 2025 and an extended absence. Her recent results, first-round exits in qualifying at Indian Wells and Miami, tell the story of a player still finding her feet rather than one ready to compete at this level.

Gibson arrives in the middle of a genuine breakthrough, having reached the top 100 after a quarterfinal run at Indian Wells and a Round of 16 showing in Miami. The one concern is clay: her first outing on the surface this season ended in a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Emiliana Arango in Madrid. Even so, Trevisan’s current fitness and match sharpness make it hard to back the Italian to take full advantage.

Prediction: Gibson in 3

Antonia Ruzic vs Kamilla Rakhimova

Head-to-Head: Rakhimova 1-0 Ruzic

Ruzic has risen quickly, cracking the top 50 earlier this year on the back of hard-court wins over some big names including Rybakina and Raducanu. Clay is a different matter though — her WTA-level record on the surface is limited, and she arrives having lost her most recent match to Sara Sorribes Tormo, a player tailor-made for this surface. Her 2026 record of 3-5 suggests she hasn’t quite clicked yet.

Rakhimova has also had a bumpy season, losing 12 of 23 matches going into Madrid, where she fell in the first round. But she has genuine clay pedigree — a WTA 125 title at Guadalajara and deep runs in Bogota and Rabat — and she leads this head-to-head. On a surface that rewards heavy ball-striking and physical consistency, Rakhimova’s game is the better fit.

Prediction: Rakhimova in 3

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBLf8O0wjC" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3976px; aspect-ratio: 3976/2649;" ></smartframe-embed>

Zeynep Sonmez vs Jennifer Ruggeri

Head-to-Head: First meeting

Sonmez has been one of the quiet success stories of 2026, rising to a career-high ranking off the back of strong results at the Australian Open, Merida, and Madrid. Working with Ons Jabeur’s coach Issam Jellali, she has become a more aggressive and varied player, and her clay credentials are genuine; she has been picking up wins on the surface this season.

Ruggeri is a wildcard making her Masters main draw debut on home soil. All three of her ITF titles have come on clay, and the crowd will be behind her. But the ranking gap, Sonmez is inside the top 70, Ruggeri outside the top 300, reflects a real difference in quality and experience at this level.

Prediction: Sonmez in 2

Rome’s clay courts have historically separated those who thrive on dirt from those who simply tolerate it, and Day 1 at WTA Rome serves up three matches that illustrate that divide quite sharply.
