For many years, the indefatigable Spaniard dominated the courts at Roland Garros. Victory after victory. Title after title. So much so that the tournament became synonymous with the great Spaniard. Every edition felt like a procession to what felt like an inevitable defense of his title time and time again. After all, having played well over a hundred matches, his opponents only got the better of him four times.

Finally, that story gets told at the right stage, as Netflix announced a documentary about the man who made Roland Garros his playground. 14 finals. 14 victories. 14 titles. 112 wins. Only four losses. Not dropping a set in four of those title runs. That story definitely needed telling, and now Netflix is going to do the honours.

It is also very fitting that the story begins during the tournament. This year marks the 125th edition of the old age tournament. And five days after the main draw kicks off, the story of the greatest player to ever grace the tournament will also start being told.

To put the magnitude of his achievements in the tournament into perspective, the second-most successful male player in the Open Era at Roland Garros is Björn Borg, who won six titles–less than half of Nadal’s total. It was the kind of dominance at a particular event, rarely ever seen in sports, let alone at the highest levels of an individual sport. He was only ever beaten by three men, Robin Soderling, Novak Djokovic (twice), and Alexander Zverev.

The record holders for titles at the other Slams are, Novak Djokovic with 10 titles at the Australian Open with a win rate of 91%, Roger Federer at Wimbledon with a win rate of 88%, Pete Sampras, Jimmy Connors, and Federer at with five each at the US Open, and with win rates of 89%, 85% and 86% respectively. Nadal’s win rate at the French Open is a staggering 97%, while playing in arguably the toughest era in tennis.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="6dfbdbe8ed6ff2eb8f8e8ee3c2cef8f4" image-id="wennTtcjatUb" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3055px; aspect-ratio: 3055/2037;" ></smartframe-embed>

Now that the story rightfully gets told on a global scale. As the man who once made the outrageous look routine now gets handed his flowers during the tournament, it was, for many years, his spiritual home. Fans of the Mallorcan will no doubt be excited by the announcement and will be eagerly anticipating the first releases of what already feels like an intriguing documentary. It further adds to the splendour and excitement of the second slam of the year, which was already much anticipated following the drama that unfolded on the courts of Phillipe Chatrier last year where Carlos Alcaraz, considered heir apparent to the great Nadal won the title in rather astounding fashion.

Main Photo Credit: Mike Frey-USA TODAY Sports

The story of Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros is a storied one of arguably the greatest ever performance of any athlete at any one event.
