And although this rivalry is not surface-dependent, as both players have wins against each other on multiple surfaces, Alcaraz also leads on clay, winning three of their four matches, including two at the French Open.

In Monte Carlo, both players have had similar paths to the final, dropping just one set each—and remarkably, for both, that came in the round of 16. Apart from that, neither player has faced real adversity, showing just how big a gap the two have from the rest of the field.

Match Preview

The most fascinating thing about this matchup is that, unlike most great rivalries, neither player has a clear stylistic edge, which almost always means that the winner is the one who manages the pressure points better. Although early in this rivalry it was Sinner who excelled in those moments, since 2024 Alcaraz has been the more mentally solid player, winning seven of their last nine meetings on tour.

There are still clear patterns each player will look to employ in the final to improve their chances.

Serve and Return Dynamics

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBH68SISvC" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6000px; aspect-ratio: 6000/4000;" ></smartframe-embed>

For Alcaraz, his kick and slider serve will be paramount in generating free points. He has historically had great success with the kick serve against Sinner, especially on clay, but this is something the Italian adjusted to in their last meeting on the surface, where the Spaniard lost that edge.

Alcaraz will need to regain that advantage, as this is a matchup in which he already has the weaker serve, at least on paper. While he has reversed that trend in the past against Sinner, the way Sinner has been serving this year, arguably possessing the best serve in the game, it will be difficult for Alcaraz to have the upper hand in that department unless the Italian has a well under-par serving day.

Both players are also among the best returners in the game, which puts even more emphasis on serve. The second serve, in particular, will be crucial, as the player who wins more than 50% of their second-serve points will likely be in a strong position in the match.

Important Baseline Patterns

Ultimately, the match will likely be decided in the baseline exchanges. Here, both players again have distinct patterns they will need to execute.

Sinner will look to attack the Alcaraz forehand, as getting him on the run on that side remains a slight vulnerability. The backhand down the line will also be key for the Italian, as it has been an effective shot in this matchup, allowing him to change direction before Alcaraz is fully set in rallies.

Another crucial shot for Sinner will be the running forehand. He will likely need to be aggressive with it when he is pushed wide by Alcaraz’s heavy, angled forehands. That shot has been one of Alcaraz’s most effective weapons in this rivalry, as when Sinner is forced outside the singles lines, he struggles to generate the same power and precision, often leading to short balls or errors.

It will also be interesting to see how each player uses variety in thier game. While it has always been a staple of Alcaraz’s game, Sinner has improved significantly in this area over the past six months. In their last meeting at the Nitto ATP Finals, Sinner actually out-varied Alcaraz. If he manages to do so again on Sunday, it could be a decisive factor in his pursuit of a first major clay title.

These two are by far the best players in the world and are so closely matched that every meeting feels like a 50-50 encounter. So, who do you think will win episode 17 between the two, ahead of what will undoubtedly be many more meetings this year and beyond?

Main Photo Credit: Mike Frey-Imagn Images

After a near five-month wait, tennis will once again get a taste of what is currently the marquee matchup in the sport, as Carlos Alcaraz takes on Jannik Sinner with both the Monte Carlo title and the World No. 1 ranking on the line.
