While he had a small hiccup in the round of 16, dropping his first set at a Masters event since Shanghai last year, Sinner quickly regrouped to win his quarterfinal match against Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets as well.

Zverev, on the other hand, has had a much tougher path to the semifinals here. The German was a couple of points away from losing in his opening match itself, clawing his way back from a double break down in the third set. While he rode the momentum of that victory to a much cleaner performance in the next round, Zverev was again pushed to a third set by Joao Fonseca in the quarterfinals.

Head-to-Head and Clay Dynamics

The head-to-head between the two players now stands at 8-4 in favour of Sinner, with, more importantly, the Italian winning seven of their last matches, dropping just two sets across them. But all of those matches were played on hard courts, and this meeting on clay gives a potentially different angle to this matchup, one that, on paper, you might think may favour the German.

One factor is that, historically, Zverev prefers clay more than Sinner, who has admitted multiple times that clay is the surface he least prefers. One reason for that might be the change in physicality the surface requires, as the Italian has shown a tendency to display vulnerabilities in that area across his career.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBhCNuoYmc" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5000px; aspect-ratio: 5000/3333;" ></smartframe-embed>

Match Preview

While that might all be true, this is still a very mature, battle-tested, and near his best version of Sinner. While the Italian has seen a decrease in his forehand potency and baseline points win rate this year, he has countered that by possessing arguably the best serve in the game—one that in Miami and Indian Wells even outshone Zverev’s serve, which is the German’s biggest strength.

The key for Zverev in Monte Carlo will be to do more of what he did in Miami, a match that was a lot closer than the score suggested. In that match, Zverev adopted a nice balance between rallying and aggression off his vulnerable forehand wing, unlike at Indian Wells, where, against a seemingly not 100% physically stable Sinner, the German, instead of making the match physical, committed unnecessary unforced errors.

If that balance between rallies and aggression is found by Zverev, this can again get close, as Sinner’s serve should not be as automatic on the slow clay as it was on the fast hard courts. But despite that, Sinner holds most of the advantages from a shot-to-shot basis in this matchup, if not all. And with his added variety recently, which can work well against an opponent like Zverev, who likes to stand behind the baseline and defend, Sinner should like his chances of winning his 21st consecutive Masters 1000 match and reaching the final.

Main Photo Credit: Mike Frey – Imagn Images

For the third consecutive Masters 1000 tournament this year, Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev will be going head-to-head against each other in the semifinals, with a spot in the final of the Monte Carlo Masters on the line.
