Four More WTA Players Withdraw From French Open

There is much excitement in the tennis world as the 2024 French Open gets underway on Sunday. The women’s draw led to many exciting matchups, with five first round matches sticking out the most. However, some notable names are missing this year at Roland-Garros. We at LWOT already reported on four WTA players that withdrew from the French Open. This article lists four more more women who have since withdrawn and then lists their replacements in the draw.

Which Players Have Withdrawn?

Jessica Pegula was the first player to withdraw from the French Open. The American No. 2 has not played since the Billie Jean King Cup over a month ago due to an injury. Although Pegula says she is progressing well, the 30-year-old has elected to be very cautious with her recovery to make sure she does not aggravate the problem further. The six-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist expects to be fit for the grass court season.

Taylor Townsend was the second player to withdraw from the French Open. She announced on her Instagram page that this was due to a chronic ankle sprain, which she picked up at the Morocco Open. Townsend has an electrifying brand of tennis when she is at her best, making her absence a loss for the tournament.

Jodie Burrage also withdrew from the event. The Briton initially entered the drew in Karolina Muchova’s place. Unfortunately, Burrage rolled her ankle while preparing in Paris. That also means she is not certain for her home Grand Slam at Wimbledon at the start of July.

Belinda Bencic is the other player missing from the French Open. Unlike the other players, this has been known for some time. The Olympic gold medalist has taken time away from tennis since becoming pregnant with her first child. She was still officially replaced on the entry list for the tournament due to her ranking.

Who Replaces Those Four Players In The Draw?

Dalma Galfi benefits from Pegula’s decision to withdraw from the French Open. The Hungarian has some Grand Slam pedigree, having previously reached the third round at Wimbledon and the US Open. She faces a tricky first round against Katerina Siniakova.

Panna Udvardy replaces Townsend at the French Open. Her and Galfi were both lucky losers and she will hope to take advantage of the opportunity that has been presented to her. Udvardy received a very difficult opening round draw against the 2021 runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Jana Fett is the third lucky loser in the French Open main draw. It is set to be the Croatian’s maiden appearance at Roland-Garros and her first Grand Slam main draw match in nearly two years. Jessica Bouzas Maneiro is her first round opponent.

Finally, Aleksandra Krunic enters the French Open due to Bencic withdrawing from the tournament. She has been to the second round in Paris on two occasions. Krunic will need to defeat Katie Volynets to achieve that for a third time.
