Elena Rybakina vs. Aryna Sabalenka

Grand Slam finals are becoming old hat for Elena Rybakina. After winning her first major at Wimbledon in 2022, the 23-year-old is back in the finals just half a year later.

Born in Moscow but representing Kazakhstan, Rybakina’s No. 23 ranking is deceiving. She would have had a significant bump had she been awarded ranking points for winning Wimbledon.

However, the WTA and ATP stripped the All England Club of awarding points after it banned Russian and Belarusian players last year due to the invasion of Ukraine. Essentially making the tournament an exhibition.

Regardless of her ranking, Rybakina hasn’t missed a beat since last summer.

So far in Melbourne, she’s knocked off world No. 1 Iga Swiatek, No. 17 Jelena Ostapenko, last year’s runner-up Danielle Collins, and most recently, two-time Aussie Open winner Victoria Azarenka.

Rybakina has a punishing baseline style and ferocious serve (44 aces – leads tournament) that mirrors upcoming opponent Aryna Sabalenka.

Sabalenka has finally shaken the semifinals monkey off her back, advancing to a Grand Slam final for the first time in her career. The 24-year-old was previously 0-3 in the semis at major tournaments (2 US Open, Wimbledon).

The Belarusian has yet to drop a set at this year’s Aussie and looks every bit the part of a world No. 5.

Sabalenka holds the head-to-head edge between the pair 3-1, but Rybakina was victorious in their most recent match at the World Tennis League in 2022.

Set betting

All four previous matches between these two have gone the three-set distance. Sabalenka has taken the opening set in every meeting, including 6-0 in their most recent outing – a match won by Rybakina.
