With the 2021 ATP season now underway, the top seeds begin their seasons on day 3. Here are my predictions for Day 3
Gianluca Mager vs Sam Querrey
After dropping the first set in the opening round, Gianluca Mager recovered well to get a three set victory over Ryan Harrison. It was a far simpler route through to the second round for Sam Querrey, who’s straight sets win over Mackenzie McDonald was the perfect way to start his 2021 season. Querrey is one of several Americans in the draw and poses a big threat this week with his powerful baseline game. With his big serve and forehand combination, I see Querrey simply having too much for Mager.
Prediction: Querrey in 2
Tommy Paul vs Sebastian Korda
A battle of two young Americans promises to be a close match. Both players showed promising improvement in their games last season with Korda reaching the fourth round at Roland Garros, and Paul recording a victory over Grigor Dimitrov at the Australian Open. Both recorded straight sets victories in the opening round, and will be looking to continue to build confidence heading into the new season. I predict that this will go to three sets and it will be interesting to see which player will take the opportunity to go deep into the first event of the season. I think Paul’s experience will be the key to getting him the win in three sets, utilising his powerful baseline game.
Prediction: Paul in 3
Thiago Monteiro vs John Isner
John Isner is looking to get his 2021 season off to a good start on the Delray Beach hard courts. The American has been hampered since a foot injury in the final of Miami in 2019, not being able to find his best tennis since then. Isner is seeded at no 2 this week, and is won of the favourites to lift the title. Thiago Monteiro is mainly known for his clay court game and the Brazilian is looking to establish himself on the ATP Tour, and I think Isner’s serve will see him through to a straight sets win
Prediction: Isner in 2
Christian Garin vs Christian Harrison
Christian Garin has had an impressive rise over the last few seasons on the ATP Tour. The Chilean won his first ATP Tour title in Houston in 2019 and has elevated his ranking into the worlds top 30. Garin will be looking to build on this progress during the 2021 season. Christian Harrison came through his opening round in straight sets and has done well since recovering from injury, however I see Garin having too much for the American, recording a straight sets win.
Prediction: Garin in 2
