ATP Houston Challenger Day 3 Predictions
Christopher O’Connell vs Andrea Vavassori
Head to Head: never played
Christopher O’Connell is having the season of his career and has been winning a high number of matches this season. Vavassori is better on clay, but won his first round match against Matias Franco Descotte in straight sets. Vavassori is going to struggle to figure out ways to win games in this match, O’Connell groundstrokes are very solid and he has good serve. O’Connell’s also clearly a confident player, from all of the winning. O’Connell might be slightly fatigued from making the final last week in Knoxville, but expect him to comfortably win this match.
Prediction: O’Connell in 2
Tennys Sandgren vs Edan Leshem
Head to Head: never played
Tennys Sandgren is the No. 1 seed and is a very good player. He had a good, but uneven, year. He will often play from far behind the court and counterpunch, but he is a very good mover and can hit the ball hard when given the chance. Edan Leshem is a solid player, but doesn’t have the weapons to hit through Sandgren. Sandgren will frustrate Leshem with his defense and hit through Leshem with his power at times too. Sandgren wins this match without too many problems.
Prediction: Sandgren in 2
Michael Mmoh vs Raymond Sarmiento
Head to Head: 1-0 Mmoh
Michael Mmoh was very impressive in winning the title in Knoxville last week. In the final against Christopher O’Connell, he would play consistent tennis and then as soon as he was given the opportunity to attack, he would flawlessly transition to offense. Sarmiento is a really clean ballstriker and is a tricky opponent to face. Mmoh won the only previous matchup at the 2017 Lexington Challenger in three sets and expect another three set match in this one. Mmoh might be slightly fatigued from winning Knoxville last week, but he will be able to hit through Sarmiento in key moments in this match and advance to the round of 16.
Prediction: Mmoh in 3
Marcos Giron vs Brandon Holt
Head to Head: never played
This is a matchup between two very consistent players. Marcos Giron is much more experienced than Brandon Holt, but Holt is rising quickly. Neither player has many weaknesses, although Giron is craftier and can counterpunch a bit better than Holt at this point. Holt won’t be able to outlast Giron in this match and will be forced to get more aggressive than he would like. While Holt will be able to get a set, expect Giron to win the match.
Prediction: Giron in 3
