We have reached the final in Cincinnati. Daniil Medvedev has reached his second consecutive Masters 1000 final, while Goffin is about to compete in his first. We are about to see a new Masters 1000 champion on the ATP tour. Who will win? It’s anybody’s match, but here are my thoughts.
ATP Cincinnati Final Prediction
Daniil Medvedev vs David Goffin
Head-to-head: 1-1
Both of the meetings between these two came this year. Medvedev won their meeting at the Australian Open in straight sets, while Goffin got his revenge with a five-set victory at Wimbledon.
Both of these players are extremely solid and consistent. In general, it’s hard to pick between the two. Goffin struggled early in the hard court season, losing his first match in both Washington, D.C. and Montreal. He has certainly changed this part of the season now. He will be heading into the US Open, regardless of result here. And that’s probably a good thing, judging by his opponent.
Medvedev is absolutely on fire right now. He made a tremendous charge to the final in Montreal, and just played an incredible two sets to upset Novak Djokovic here in Cincinnati. His game is clear, consistent, and very difficult for anyone to penetrate.
This is a matchup of two very strong baseline defenders with great returns of serve. Goffin is a bit more of an attacking player, but both of their games start from working their way through rallies. This could lead to some long rallies as each feels his opponent out. Still, you have to think that Medvedev is just the better player right now. His game is much more consistent and he’s troubling everyone on tour, except for Rafael Nadal. He should be able to work through Goffin and come away with a maiden Masters 1000 title.
Prediction: Medvedev in 2
