A Sebastian Giovinco brace and a Jozy Altidore tap-in proved to be too much for a Montreal side, in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

King of the North – Sebastian Giovinco, TFC Victorious in 401 Derby Over Montreal Impact

Toronto continued their quest for the Supporters’ Shield vy going nine points clear of the table while setting a franchise record in both points (56), and wins (16), in a single season.

Toronto opened the scoring after a careless shove from Impact midfielder Blerim Džemaili, set up a free kick 22 yards out. Giovinco expertly curled it in, leaving Montreal keeper Evan Bush rooted to the spot. Toronto’s leading scorer continues to bewitch his opponents from set pieces. Sunday’s strike was his MLS all-time leading 12th free kick goal.

Montreal had trouble responding all game long, as the Reds’ defence limited les bleus-blanc-noires to shots from distance. Now down two goals, the Impact were given a lifeline when captain Ignacio Piatti’s long range effort brought them within one. The North Star Bell did not ring for long however, as Giovinco answered right back with a strong volley, a mere 43 seconds later.

At one point it looked like the Reds would escape enemy territory unscathed. However, after fielding a routine lob, Dominic Oduro’s errant knee caught Alex Bono on the side of the head. The team a survived scare as the goalkeeper finished the game.

Up Next:

The Impact will be in tough again as they host the Chicago Fire at home this Saturday. After their upcoming bye week, Greg Vanney and his men will look to continue their banner year, when they host San Jose September 9th.

Embed from Getty Images

Sebastian Giovinco registered two goals while Jozy Altidore added another as Toronto FC cruised to a 3-1 win over rival Montreal Impact.

[119,3,5
129,57,34,306,152
post-9481","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-mls","category-news","category-tfc","tag-fifa","tag-mls","tag-montreal-impact","tag-sebastian-giovinco","tag-toronto-fc
["GET
