Editorial (August 20, 2017)<\/strong> – D.C. United won 1-0<\/a> at Colorado Rapids on Saturday on an own goal<\/a> from Jared Watts. The Rapids parted ways<\/a> with Pablo Mastroeni on Wednesday. Steve Cooke started a 4-3-3<\/a> in his first game as Interim Head Coach. Both sides were looking to end a poor run.<\/p>\n

D.C. United Win At Colorado Rapids: Three Big Takeaways<\/h2>\n

Both teams created some good opportunities, but could not finish. The Rapids should be happy with the performance but no the result, as luck just wasn’t on their side on the night. Here’s some key things I noticed in the match:<\/p>\n

Work In Progress Attacks Show Promise:<\/h3>\n

The Rapids 4-3-3 kickstarted the offense tonight. They created 18 shots, four of which were on goal. They had two go off the post and forced Goalkeeper Bill Hamid into making several<\/a> big saves. The ball movement was much better after the first 20 minutes.<\/p>\n

Coach Cooke was happy with the second half changes: “In the second half we created enough chances to win the game not by a small margin. Unfortunately with the post and the crossbar and maybe one cleared off the line.”<\/em> He added “sometimes in football you don’t quit get what you deserve. Tonight was one of those nights.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The wide players got forward<\/a> regularly. Kevin Doyle got way more touches than he did in the 4-4-2. While they created lots of chances, they didn’t get as much service into the box<\/a> with numbers. They also were unlucky to not get a goal.<\/p>\n

“We created more chances at home than we have most of the season, and good chances.<\/em>
\n Everyone here, myself massively included, we wanted to play well for him,”<\/em> said Striker Kevin Doyle, who had three shots in the game and hit the crossbar<\/a> in the second half.<\/p>\n
