Montreal has won just a single game since their last loss in Harrison, NJ on August 13th.

Key for the Red Bulls this week was not only finding a lead, but also maintaining it and closing out a game. With the playoffs looming ever closer, team mentality is front and center. For the Red Bulls, this game would prove to be a gut check victory.

Red Bulls Clinch Seventh Straight Playoff Appearance In Win Over Montreal

Montreal threatened early with a terrific opportunity from Ignacio Piatti. In the seventh minute, the Argentinian winger almost turned a counter attack opportunity into a goal but fired his shot wide after dribbling through the New York backline.

Piatti had one of the best opportunities of the first half, and ultimately the game. His second run at goal was saved by a savvy defensive play from Dax McCarty, the Red Bulls returning captain, in the 32nd minute. McCarty made a 50+ yard run to put pressure on Piatti and force his run wide. Louis Robles saved Piatti’s shot at the near post.

The Red Bulls controlled the first half but had a difficult time trying to find quality opportunities. Dax McCarty had the Red Bull’s best chance with a rebounded header on a corner kick. Montreal’s goalkeeper, Evan Bush, did very well to keep the ball out of the net with a diving save.

Jesse Marsch was not satisfied with his team’s performance at the half. He thought they responded well to the coach’s challenge of playing with “urgent patience”.

“We felt strongly — the phrase I used at halftime was urgent patience,” Marsch noted. “So we wanted to keep pushing the game, but not do it in a panicky way, and know that as a group it was going to come. So felt that the concentration to make sure that we didn’t let the game slip was at a very high level, and we showed a lot of maturity.”

The second half was one of quiet but comfortable domination. Montreal could not find a single shot in the half while NY poured on the pressure. NY out-shot Montreal 4-0 and out possessed the visitors 57% to 43%.

The breakthrough came from recent signing Daniel Royer in the 60th minute. Felipe took a shot from the top of the box and it deflected wide to Chris Duvall. Duvall crossed for Bradley Wright-Phillips. The NY striker could not get to the ball. Royer managed to make a smart run inside of his defender and got to the ball. The resulting header lacked pace but managed to sneak by Bush.

Daniel Royer was happy to have scored after coming close to netting goals in each of his previous two matches.

“[My confidence] gets better day-by-day,” he said. “Like I said in some interviews, it’s a new style, it’s a new philosophy for me which I never experienced in my former clubs in that way so it took some time, and I think that’s normal. I’ve still only been here for just a few weeks, and it’s getting better day-by-day and I’m feeling more comfortable and more confident.”

The win propelled New York (13-9-9) to first place in the East on goal differential and secured a playoff spot. The Red Bulls have qualified for seven post-seasons in a row for the franchise. After the club’s poor start to the season, the team showed tremendous heart and will. While the practice of dropping points may be frustrating for the fan base, the Red Bulls have lost just three times since April 24th, a most impressive run of form.

NY still has an outside shot of winning the Supporters’ Shield for the second year in a row. But the trophy seems out of reach without significant help in the standings. Taking maximum points from the final three games will be critical to any sort of repeat performance. New York will start the final game swing on short rest against the Philadelphia Union at home.

Scoring Summary:

NY – Daniel Royer 1 (Chris Duvall) 60′

Misconduct Summary:

MTL-Victor Cabrera (caution, foul) 21′

MTL – Ambroise Oyongo (caution, foul) 48′

NY – Sacha Kljestan (caution, foul) 56′

MTL – Hernan Bernadello (caution, foul) 56′

MTL – Marco Donadel (caution, foul) 81′

New York Red Bulls: Luis Robles; Kemar Lawrence, Damien Perrinelle, Aurelien Collin, Chris Duvall, Dax McCarty (captain), Felipe, Daniel Royer (Mike Grella, 83′), Sacha Kljestan (Sean Davis, 90’+4), Alex Muyl, Bradley Wright-Phillips

TOTAL SHOTS: 13; SHOTS ON GOAL: 7; FOULS: 14; OFFSIDE: 0; CORNER KICKS: 7; SAVES: 3

Montreal Impact: Evan Bush; Laurent Ciman, Hassoun Camara, Ambroise Oyongo, Victor Cabrera, Hernan Bernadello (Harry Shipp, 82′), Marco Donadel, Patrice Bernier (Matteo Mancosu, 68′), Ignacio Piatti, Michael Salazar (Dominic Oduro, 68′), Dider Drogba

TOTAL SHOTS: 5; SHOTS ON GOAL: 3; FOULS: 15; OFFSIDE: 3; CORNER KICKS: 2; SAVES: 6

Referee: Jorge Gonzalez

Referee’s Assistants: Brian Dunn, Eric Weisbrod

4th Official: Jose Carlos Ontivero

Attendance: 22,209

Red Bulls Clinch Seventh Straight Playoff Appearance.
