{"id":5097,"date":"2017-03-18T07:00:42","date_gmt":"2017-03-18T11:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsoccer.com\/?p=5097"},"modified":"2017-03-18T02:35:27","modified_gmt":"2017-03-18T06:35:27","slug":"mls-2017-week-three-preview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/2017\/03\/18\/mls-2017-week-three-preview\/","title":{"rendered":"MLS 2017 Week Three Preview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MLS week three brings another full slate of weekend matches, the last before the crucial CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers next week. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a couple things to watch:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>MLS 2017 Week Three Preview<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Replacement<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toronto FC, the defending Eastern Conference champions and a consensus favorite for the Supporters\u2019 Shield this year, have two uninspiring draws in two games against Real Salt Lake and Philadelphia. While it\u2019s true that both matches were on the road and they easily could have escaped with a win in at least one of those two games, TFC have yet to look like any kind of world-beater through the first two weeks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of that has been due to a lost connection between <a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/jozy-altidore\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jozy Altidore<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/sebastian-giovinco\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sebastian Giovinco<\/strong><\/a>. Those two stars are responsible for creating most of Toronto\u2019s attacking opportunities, and they are usually perfectly capable of doing exactly that. But recently, they haven\u2019t been playing off of each other as well as they usually are able to, and it has hurt TFC\u2019s attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One reason they weren\u2019t effective together last week was the play of Philadelphia center back <strong>O<\/strong><strong>guchi Onyewu<\/strong>, who was confident and strong enough to shut down Altidore when he tried to hold up play or run at the backline:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-video\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">When Altidore and Giovinco don&#8217;t have success running at backlines, they are taken out of the game. Onyewu last week: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RQaDhoZz3V\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/RQaDhoZz3V<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Harrison Hamm (@harrisonhamm21) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/harrisonhamm21\/status\/842472504987930624\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">March 16, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Altidore couldn\u2019t draw defenders and find space, Giovinco had less room to receive the ball. That meant the Atomic Ant had to drop deep to find possession, and he becomes a lot less Atomic 50 yards from the goal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/harrisonhamm21\/status\/842476157828317184\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His touches were scarce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Philly, because Giovinco is not fond of having to facilitate possession deeper. Without him up top doing the things he does best, TFC are diminished significantly, and <strong>Vincent Vasquez<\/strong> wasn\u2019t solving any problems in midfield. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The chart I linked to above was from only the first half, as Giovinco exited in first half stoppage time with a thigh injury. He will be unavailable when Toronto travel to Vancouver on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Tosaint Ricketts<\/strong>, a speedy Canadian super-sub, is his likely replacement, and somehow, he could be the spark TFC need to get the front two working again. The reason for this boils down to his differing style of play from Giovinco, and some evidence was found in his second half performance last week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we saw last season when <strong>Greg Vanney<\/strong> utilized him as a substitute off the bench when they were chasing a game, Ricketts is content to maneuver around the channels and use his speed to burn larger center backs. He will combine around the box, but he prefers to get in behind with crafty runs rather than dictate the pace of an attack like Giovinco. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This could prove effective in a full 90 next to a center forward like Altidore, who will be\u00a0pressured hard whenever he gets on the ball. A speedy channel runner could prove more effective at quickly finding space in behind, without the frills that Giovinco provides. This is not to diminish anything that the MVP provides, but it is worth noting that Toronto have not scored a goal with Giovinco on the field since the conference semifinal against Montreal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ricketts even got on the ball more often in 45 minutes last week in Philly:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Tosaint Ricketts found a lot more touches than Giovinco last week in 45 minutes. He might be (whispers) a better fit alongside Altidore. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4bkCktjodt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/4bkCktjodt<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Harrison Hamm (@harrisonhamm21) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/harrisonhamm21\/status\/842875598267715584\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">March 17, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vancouver, who have one point in two games, have a strong-man center back in <strong>Kendall Waston<\/strong>, so his matchup with Altidore will be very interesting to watch. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t be surprised if Ricketts goes out and scores a couple Saturday afternoon. Also don\u2019t be surprised if the Whitecaps shut them down, and it turns out that Toronto have some more tactical issues on their hands. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Either could happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Rookies<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last season was a banner year for MLS rookies. <a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/jordan-morris\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jordan Morris<\/strong><\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/keegan-rosenberry\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> Keegan Rosenberry<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/jack-harrison\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jack Harrison<\/strong><\/a> carved out starting roles, and a number of other players were able to be productive for their teams. <a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/brandon-vincent\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Brandon Vincent<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/jonathan-campbell\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jonathan Campbell<\/strong><\/a> were starters on Chicago\u2019s backline.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/josh-yaro\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>J<\/strong><strong>osh Yaro<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/fabian-herbers\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Fabian Herbers<\/strong><\/a> played 1,000 minutes in Philadelphia. And <a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/tsubasa-endoh\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tsubasa Endoh<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/julian-buescher\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Julian<\/strong> <strong>Buescher<\/strong><\/a>,<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/tony-alfaro\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tony Alfaro<\/a><\/strong>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/kip-colvey\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Kip Colvey<\/strong><\/a> are all significant depth pieces throughout the league.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is rare for MLS to see such talent come through the draft across the board. 2015 was solid as well \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/cyle-larin\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Cyle Larin<\/strong><\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/axel-sjoberg\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> Axel Sjoberg<\/strong><\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/fatai-alashe\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> Fatai Alashe<\/strong><\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/cristian-roldan\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> Cristian Roldan<\/strong><\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/saad-abdul-salaam\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> Saad Abdul-Salaam<\/strong><\/a>, and<a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/dominique-badji\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> Dominique Badji<\/strong><\/a> *in the fourth round* were among the top talents from two years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, the draft wasn\u2019t as obviously good, though. There were no surefire stars like Morris or Larin\u00a0coming through the pipeline, and many down through the draft may not see real playing time for a while. Not to say that there are no potential stars in this crop \u2014 it is way, WAY too early to tell \u2014 but right now, many teams have not seen enough in their first-year players to justify giving them real minutes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/julian-gressel\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Julian Gressel<\/strong><\/a> is a consistent starter in Atlanta, but he is the only current starter from the entire 2017 SuperDraft class, compared to five last year. While <strong>Jakob Nerwinski<\/strong>,<strong> Justin Schmidt<\/strong>, and<strong> Jacori Hayes<\/strong> also have started games, they did it only because of injuries or necessary squad rotation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the top players on the board have yet to receive a first team opportunity. <strong>Abu Danladi, Jeremy Ebobisse, Jonathan Lewis<\/strong>, and<strong> Miles Robinson<\/strong> have rode the bench so far, and even <strong>Jackson Yueill<\/strong> (who was expected to get early-season playing time in San Jose) hasn\u2019t had a chance yet. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t know right now whether this is simply a reflection of the class or a sign of MLS teams favoring their own young talent. What we do know is that we have yet to see top-tier rookies emerge from this class, with the possible exception of Gressel.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep an eye on this as the weeks go by, because I have no doubt that a few will come about at some point.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Final thoughts<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 How sustainable is Atlanta United\u2019s 6-1 thrashing of Minnesota last week? Not very. But <a href=\"http:\/\/atlutd.com\/players\/miguel-almiron\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Miguel Almiron<\/strong><\/a> showing himself to be a capable central creator looks very sustainable. That will make a huge, huge difference for <strong>Tata Martino<\/strong>\u2019s side, especially with <a href=\"http:\/\/atlutd.com\/players\/josef-martinez\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Josef Martinez<\/strong><\/a> up top finishing like <strong>Bradley Wright-Phillips<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 Both D.C. United and Columbus Crew SC looked, frankly, terrible last week. The Black and Red were decimated at Yankee Stadium by <a href=\"http:\/\/nycfc.com\/players\/david-villa\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>David Villa<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>Maxi Morales<\/strong>, and the Crew lost a track meet to the Dynamo relay team\/front three. They play this week at RFK, both looking for their first good result of the season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 The player to watch between Orlando and Philadelphia is <strong>Haris Medunjanin<\/strong>, the Union\u2019s Bosnian number eight. He has a wicked right foot that can do things like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"und\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Kevin_Kinkead\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@Kevin_Kinkead<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MLSAnalyst\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@MLSAnalyst<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/P2Qtuo9ZzV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/P2Qtuo9ZzV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jason Foster (@JogaBonitoUSA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JogaBonitoUSA\/status\/840706751880134656\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">March 11, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medunjanin also has been hitting perfect long balls from the back, creating opportunities <a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/jay-simpson\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jay Simpson<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/mlssoccer.com\/players\/cj-sapong\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>CJ Sapong<\/strong><\/a> had been without, but those aren\u2019t exciting as that pass above.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 San Jose, one of four teams with six points in two games, will be tested on the road for the first time against Sporting KC this week. Look for an appearance from Albanian attacker <strong>Jahmir Hyka<\/strong>, who was a dynamic feature last week in the Quakes\u2019 3-2 victory over Vancouver. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 Two of the other MLS teams with two early season victories will face off late Saturday night in Portland. It will be a big test for the visiting Houston Dynamo, who put together wonderfully entertaining home performances over the past two weeks. I was on the LWOS podcast this week to talk about why they have been able to find success early on, and you can listen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsoccer.com\/2017\/03\/17\/last-word-sc-radio-u-s-soccer-national-training-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 Finally, the national TV game this week is between the Red Bulls and the Sounders on Sunday. Seattle have a draw and a loss in two road games to start the season, which perplexes me given their success last season with <a href=\"http:\/\/soundersfc.com\/players\/clint-dempsey\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Clint Dempsey<\/strong><\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/soundersfc.com\/players\/nicolas-lodeiro\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> Nicolas Lodeiro<\/strong><\/a>, and Morris on the field at the same time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212; The Red Bulls have a couple of tight victories against Atlanta and Colorado.
