The Colorado Rapids handed FC Dallas their first home loss of the year on Saturday night with a 1-0 result thanks to a second half goal from Dominique Badji. With a ragtag Starting XI, Colorado was able to stymie the Dallas attack.

FC Dallas Home Unbeaten Streak Ended By Colorado Rapids, 1-0

Rapids head coach Pablo Mastroeni again had to make some difficult lineup decisions with several key players unavailable. Dominique Badji started at center forward in place of Kevin Doyle. The attacking midfield consisted of Dillon Powers at the No. 10 role with Sebastian Le Toux and Marlon Hairston on his wings. With Bobby Burling unavailable, Jared Watts started at center back.

Dallas manager Oscar Pareja did not start playmaker Mauro Diaz. He had his team in a 4-4-2 with Victor Ulloa and Kellyn Acosta in central midfield. Maximiliano Urruti and Tesho Akindele started up top together.

Colorado got off to a slow start with Dallas controlling possession for much of the first half. Still, the Rapids were able to stay compact and limit their opponent’s scoring chances in the first half. Akindele got a great chance in the 5th minute. Dallas played a few quick passes through the middle of the field. Akindele got open between the center backs at the top of the box. He took a touch to control the ball, but shot straight at goalkeeper Tim Howard.

Urruti got a good scoring chance late in the half off a nice spin around shot, but was off target.

The half ended 0-0 with Axel Sjoberg on a yellow card.

The Rapids started the second half with a bit more life, creating a few counter attacks through Badji. They got a goal out of nowhere against the run of play in the 52nd minute. The Rapids won a throw in down the field. They played it quickly with most of FC Dallas’s players tracking back. Badji collected the throw in, ran in towards the top of the box and fired the ball into the bottom corner to score.

Pareja tried to get his side’s offense going with two quick substitutions in the second half. Michael Barrios replaced Getterson at half time. Shortly after Badji’s goal, Diaz subbed in for Ryan Hollingshead. Mauro Rosales came in later in the game as well.

FC Dallas continued to push for an equalizer with the Mauros Rosales and Diaz trying to set up their teammates. Howard forced to make several key saves, including a point blank denial of Atiba Harris.

The Rapids had a scary moment in stoppage time as substitute Kevin Doyle came out injured with an apparent ankle injury. The forward was down for almost a minute with one boot off before the official stopped play.

Dallas was unable to muster anything in the final minutes and the match ended 1-0.

This was the first home loss of the season for FC Dallas. This result was massive for Colorado considering the lineup and their recent form. They’ve opened the door (albeit only a bit) for the Supporter’s Shield. Pareja and his team will certainly be scratching their heads with their inability to create chances and score in this game without Diaz starting.

The Rapids host the San Jose Earthquakes next Saturday. If they can get three points in that very winnable game, they’ll be in great shape heading into the final month of the season.

Embed from Getty Images

FRISCO, TX (September 10, 2016) – It wasn’t pretty, bit it was effective.
