{"id":43524,"date":"2022-06-22T13:25:38","date_gmt":"2022-06-22T17:25:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/?p=43524"},"modified":"2022-06-22T13:25:38","modified_gmt":"2022-06-22T17:25:38","slug":"galaxy-sacramento-republic-open-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/2022\/06\/22\/galaxy-sacramento-republic-open-cup\/","title":{"rendered":"US Open Cup: &#8220;Slow&#8221; LA Galaxy stunned by Sacramento Republic, 2-1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Los Angeles Galaxy was booed off their home field again after being shocked 2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-1 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ussoccer.com\/stories\/2022\/06\/sacramento-republic-fc-stun-two-time-open-cup-champs-la-galaxy-2-1-in-quarterfinal-cupset\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eliminated from the U.S. Open Cup by Sacramento Republic FC<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the quarterfinals at home Tuesday night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;Slow&#8221; Galaxy stunned by Sac 2-1<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was L.A.&#8217;s first legitimate chance at a trophy under head coach Greg Vanney, but Galaxy players certainly didn\u2019t play like they were competing for silverware, or even in an elimination game for that matter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He made sure to call out his player&#8217;s lack of desire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI felt like we just weren\u2019t moving at the same speed and together. Today, I just feel like we didn\u2019t adapt inside of the game. We didn\u2019t have the right intensity. Some players did. Some didn\u2019t. The right intensity to dual and compete,\u201d Vanney confessed. \u201cAnd, I don\u2019t have a great answer, but I would say guys who continually do that, won\u2019t play. That\u2019s the message that they understand. Is, every player on the field has to play with the right intensity and the right intention. And not just play well, but play hard. And compete for those things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of competing for trophies, though, they won a chorus of boos from the 12,315 G\u2019s in attendance; the third time in the past five games the boos have rained from the rafters.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Lacking intensity<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the start, the Galaxy got it wrong, both in lineup and intensity. Gone was the desire they showed in the last round against LAFC. Instead, this was the side that put up consecutive, meek <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/2022\/05\/23\/galaxy-humiliated-houston\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3-0 losses to Texas teams at home<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were consistent in one area, however.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">True to the season script, there was plenty of possession (64% to Sac Republic\u2019s 36%) and slow cycling of the ball in the opponent\u2019s third. Throw in L.A. having trouble breaking down a stingy opponent sitting in low defensive blocks. Efrain Alvarez, not passing or shooting with a right foot? Yup, add that to your Galaxy bingo card too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was even a sighting of a K\u00e9vin Cabral and Dejan Jovelji\u0107 strike partnership that the fan base probably could\u2019ve done without.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if you had the Galaxy giving up an early goal in transition at home again, well, you won bingo.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Chasing the game, again<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside four minutes, Los Angeles was down 1-0 at home again to a well-worked counter-attacking goal by Sac Republic and had to chase the game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Republic\u2019s Douglas Martinez fired a cross into the middle of the penalty area from the right flank that both Kelvin Leerdam and Nick DePuy failed to deal with. The well-weighted ball found Rodrigo Lopez, who rifled his shot into the right side of the goal to put the away side up before most were in their seats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, the early shock didn\u2019t spur the Galaxy into action.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udc40 that service from Efra <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/atx6LYOSlE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/atx6LYOSlE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; LA Galaxy (@LAGalaxy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LAGalaxy\/status\/1539444698787434497?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 22, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An own goal scored in the 18th minute by Sac Republic\u2019s Conor Donovan from an Efrain Alvarez corner brought the Galaxy back into the game. It leveled the score 1-1 but failed to swing the game\u2019s momentum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second half was more of the same. Not even the introductions of V\u00edctor V\u00e1zquez, Juli\u00e1n Araujo, and Javier \u201cChicharito\u201d Hern\u00e1ndez, who were rested for the California Cl\u00e1sico against San Jose, could spark the offense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For all their possession, Los Angeles did not generate enough goal-scoring chances, only outshooting Republic FC by one attempt on goal, 4-3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the Galaxy was punished for it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A long-range Luis Felipe strike, that Galaxy Keeper Jonathan Klinsmann should have dealt with, incredibly dribbled past him and into the bottom right corner of the net on 70 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The first non-MLS team to reach the U.S. Open Cup semifinals since 2017.<\/p>\n<p>A historic night for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SacRepublicFC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@SacRepublicFC<\/a>, who beat the Galaxy 2-1 \ud83d\udc4f<\/p>\n<p>(via <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/opencup?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@opencup<\/a>)<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bw6zva6Rvn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/bw6zva6Rvn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; B\/R Football (@brfootball) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brfootball\/status\/1539543118831304706?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 22, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat just can\u2019t happen,\u201d Vanney said of the play that sealed the Galaxy\u2019s defeat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forced to chase the game again, L.A. showed little in the way of the creativity in the final third required to break down Republic FC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the final 20 minutes of the match, L.A. set up camp in the opposing attacking third, only to pass the ball around a lot and put in inefficient crosses that saw it limp to a 2-1 defeat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Sacramento Republic FC, it was a historic night. They are now the first non-MLS team to reach the U.S. Open Cup semifinals since 2017, while the Galaxy will have to keep waiting for their first trophy under Vanney.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is something we can learn from,\u201d Leerdam, who was made captain for the first time, shared in a press conference postgame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los Angeles will need to learn the lesson, and quickly if they are to get anything from their visit to Northern California this weekend.
