{"id":30710,"date":"2020-11-08T18:33:00","date_gmt":"2020-11-08T23:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/?p=30710"},"modified":"2020-11-08T18:33:00","modified_gmt":"2020-11-08T23:33:00","slug":"philadelphia-union-win-supporters-shield","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/2020\/11\/08\/philadelphia-union-win-supporters-shield\/","title":{"rendered":"Philadelphia Union win Supporters Shield, beat New England Revolution, 2-0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"graf graf--p\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/category\/mls\/revolution\/\" target=\"_self\">New England Revolution<\/a> arrived at the losing end of a 2\u20130 result at Subaru Park that crowned the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/category\/mls\/union\/\" target=\"_self\">Philadelphia Union<\/a> 2020 MLS Supporters Shield victors Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Goals from Sergio Santos and second-half substitute Cory Burke made the difference for the Union, whose capture of the Supporters Shield \u2014 given to the club with the highest overall points total during the regular season \u2014 marked the first major trophy the franchise has ever won.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Philadelphia finished the regular season 14\u20135\u20134 (47 points) with a perfect 9\u20130\u20130 home record and the league\u2019s best defensive record (20 goals allowed).<\/p>\n<h2>Playoff field in Eastern Conference set<\/h2>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">The Union will take a bye into the the post-season, which starts next week, and face the winner of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/category\/mls\/nashville-sc\/\" target=\"_self\">Nashville SC<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/category\/mls\/inter-miami\/\" target=\"_self\">Inter Miami CF<\/a>, the Eastern Conference\u2019s 7-seed versus 10-seed play-in game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">New England could have avoided the play-in round with a draw Sunday against Philadelphia. But the loss, combined with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/category\/mls\/redbulls\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Red Bulls<\/a> beating <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/category\/mls\/tfc\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto FC<\/a>, dropped the Revolution out of contention for a first round bye.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201cWe\u2019ll evaluate this game and then all we can do is the task at hand,\u201d said Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner. \u201cWe shot ourselves in foot obviously. We needed a result to get that top six spot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">The Revolution finished the regular season 8\u20137\u20138 (32 points) and in eighth place. They now have just one win against Philadelphia in their last 11 tries dating back to 2015, and are winless in five games against the Union this season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">&#8220;Philadelphia is a good team, that\u2019s why they\u2019ve earned more points than anyone else,\u201d Revolution head coach\/sporting director Bruce Arena said. \u201cToday they just outplayed us. In a bunch of other games we had against them we had the edge a little bit. Obviously [Philadelphia] was motivated today, but I cannot understand how our team played in first half. They will now test it against the Montreal Impact in the play-in game Nov. 20.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201cWe take every game the same way,\u201d said Scott Caldwell. \u201cMaybe we haven\u2019t been as sharp as we can be at home, but we know we can beat any team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">The Union clogged up the middle of the pitch Sunday and forced New England into giveaways and made playing through Carles Gil and Gustavo Bou difficult. Philadelphia also out-shot New England 18\u20139, with only one of the Revolution\u2019s attempts hitting the target.<\/p>\n<h2>Philadelphia capture Supporters Shield as Sergio Santos, Cory Burke score in finale<\/h2>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">The Union opened the scoring in the 42nd minute. Jakob Glesnes collected the remnants of a corner kick near the left side of the penalty area and crossed to Alejandro Bedoya, whose header clipped the bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">An open Sergio Santos knocked in the rebound with goalkeeper Matt Turner out of position and Revolution players caught flat-footed. Philadelphia made it 2\u20130 in the 70th minute. Jose Martinez\u2019s driven pass from the right flank went across the box and reached Burke, who outran Andrew Farrell and blasted past Turner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201cWe were thoroughly beaten today,\u201d Arena sad. \u201cWe were dominated in the first half. The team that showed up in the first half played a horrible game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201cOur passing, our ability to hold the ball and keep the ball was very poor.
