It was the first game for Colorado in a month. They had been dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak within the team. Alan Pulido and company were ready for the rust Rapids.

Alan Pulido, Sporting KC Outlast Rusty Colorado Rapids 4-0

This game was all Sporting from the start. The Rusty Rapids looked like they hadn’t played a game in a long time. Colorado struggled to string passes to get forward and create chances. Sporting found space and played through lines early and often.

Colorado goalkeeper William Yarbrough stood on his head in this game. Alan Pulido nearly opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Lalas Abubakar missed on a pass to Danny Wilson. Pulido intercepted the ball at the top of the box but Yarbrough came off his line to make the save.

The game got physical early with tough fouls by Amadou Dia and Collen Warner, who was starting for the suspended Kellyn Acosta. Warner was subbed out in the 28th minute after sustaining an injury.

Sporting finally got on the board in the 54th minute. After sustained pressure in the final third. Pulido got the ball and made a cut to create space on Abubakar. He shot to the bottom left corner to beat Yarbrough.

Andreu Fontàs made it 2-0 in the 67th minute. SKC had plenty of free kick chances until that point and they finally made one count. Johnny Russell found Pulido for a header that was deflected up in the air. Fontàs volleyed it first time to score.

The match ended 3-0 with Colorado recording their first shot attempt in the 82nd minute. Gadi Kinda and Gerso scored in garbage time on counter attacks against exhausted Rapids defenders.

66' Like he's done it a hundred times! @AFontas3 💯#SKCvCOL 2-0 pic.twitter.com/La7OlfDJZt

— Sporting KC (@SportingKC) October 25, 2020

Three Takeaways:

Rusty Rapids: It’s pointless to critique this performance. Colorado looked like a team in preseason and understandably so. Hopefully for Robin Fraser, they can improve quickly in fitness, passing, and tactics

Pulido back on the score sheet: Alan Pulido scored two goals against Houston Dynamo earlier this month. Prior to that, he hadn’t scored since the Colorado game at the MLS is Back tournament. He appears to be finding his shooting boots again.

Keeping pace: SKC have now won four of their last six. They are very much in the hunt for the top seed in the Western Conference, jumping into first place over Portland and Seattle with this win.

Embed from Getty Images

KANSAS CITY, KS. – Sporting Kansas City hosted Colorado Rapids on Saturday night.
