{"id":29767,"date":"2020-09-23T23:52:09","date_gmt":"2020-09-24T03:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/?p=29767"},"modified":"2020-09-23T23:52:09","modified_gmt":"2020-09-24T03:52:09","slug":"new-england-revolution-home-win-montreal-impact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/2020\/09\/23\/new-england-revolution-home-win-montreal-impact\/","title":{"rendered":"New England Revolution earn first home win, rout Montreal Impact 3-1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"graf graf--p\"><strong>Foxborough, Mass. \u2014<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/category\/mls\/revolution\/\" target=\"_self\">New England Revolution<\/a> returned to winning ways at home Wednesday night as they beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/category\/mls\/impact\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Impact<\/a> 3\u20131 at Gillette Stadium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Henry Kessler opened the scoring with his first professional goal just before halftime and Gustavo Bou and Diego Fagundez added more in the second half as the Revolution recorded their first home victory since last September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Wednesday night\u2019s win snapped a five-game winless run at home to start the 2020 season and marked the first time this year that New England has scored more than twice in a single game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201cI think it\u2019s important for players\u2019 confidence,\u201d said Revolution head coach\/sporting director Bruce Arena. \u201cWe had chances to maybe score a few more goals tonight, and I think we were fortunate to run into a tired team in Montreal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">New England (4\u20133\u20136, 18 points) jumps over Montreal (5\u20137\u20131, 16 points) and into sixth place in the Eastern Conference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Montreal, which lost 4\u20131 to Philadelphia at Red Bull Arena on Sunday, entered Wednesday\u2019s contest against the Revolution without Romell Quioto (suspension) and with injuries to Max Urruti, Matheiu Choiniere, Steeven Saba and Ballou Tabla.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">The Revolution went after the Impact right away and out-shot the visitors 20\u20137 on the night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">That said, the breakthrough from Kessler didn\u2019t arrive until the stroke of halftime. Nguyen\u2019s corner reached Kessler in the heart of the box. Then Kessler chested the feed down and unleashed a drive with his right foot that rolled past Diop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201c[Bruce] makes fun of me quite a bit and says he wants me to score three or four goals a year\u2026that\u2019s a goal center backs should have to score around there,\u201d Kessler said of opening his professional scoring account.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201cIt meant a lot. I was very obviously excited about my first goal. My teammates they all support me and I\u2019m so thankful for that. He took a pass from Tajon Buchanan at the top of the box in the 49th minute, controlled, and then fired for the far corner for the 2\u20130 lead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Fagundez entered the game in the 63rd minute for Nguyen and procured New England\u2019s third goal two minutes later. He took Buchanan lay-off near the left side of the penalty area and then slotted his first goal of the season past Diop and into the far corner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Montreal notched a consolation strike in the 86th minute as Lassi Lappalainen, who sprinted forward on a counter-attack off an Emanuel Maciel through pass, finished past Matt Turner to make it 3\u20131.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201cI\u2019m happy with the win,\u201d Bou said after the game through a Spanish Translator. \u201cObviously we need to convert, we need to score goals\u2026this helps us gain confidence to continue creating chances and generating opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201cI think we created about five or six solid chances tonight.
