{"id":29294,"date":"2020-09-02T23:23:43","date_gmt":"2020-09-03T03:23:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/?p=29294"},"modified":"2020-09-02T23:23:43","modified_gmt":"2020-09-03T03:23:43","slug":"nycfc-revolution-bruce-arena-penilla","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/2020\/09\/02\/nycfc-revolution-bruce-arena-penilla\/","title":{"rendered":"New York City FC thwart New England Revolution, 2-0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"graf graf--p\"><strong>Foxborough, Mass.<\/strong> \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/category\/mls\/nycfc\/\" target=\"_self\">New York City FC<\/a> snapped the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/category\/mls\/revolution\/\" target=\"_self\">New England Revolution<\/a>\u2019s seven-game unbeaten run in regular season play Wednesday night by taking a 2\u20130 win at a foggy and empty Gillette Stadium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">The Revolution started slow and barely found a rhythm, as they didn\u2019t register a shot on target until the 70th minute. Conversely, NYCFC bossed the game from the start, though their breakthrough arrived at the hour mark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Revolution defender Michael Mancienne deflected a point-blank shot from NYCFC\u2019s Heber into his own goal. New York iced the game 13 minutes later when Heber headed Ronald Matarrita\u2019s corner kick in off the far post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">The result marked the first time the Revolution have conceded more than once in a game since losing 2\u20131 to the Montreal Impact in the season opener.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">It\u2019s also the first time the Revolution have been shut out at home since taking a 2\u20130 loss to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/category\/mls\/lafc\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles FC<\/a> on Aug. 3, 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201cThere\u2019s frustration all around tonight,\u201d Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner said. \u201cNo one did their job. We didn\u2019t score any goals, and conceded two, and we didn\u2019t win our individual battles all over the field.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"graf graf--p\"><strong>Bruce Arena: NYCFC was our top adversary so far<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">While the Revolution offered sobering criticisms of their performance Wednesday, New England head coach Bruce Arena credited New York for earning the result.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">New England is now 6\u20135\u20133 against NYCFC all-time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201cWe had an off night, but we need to give our opponents credit,\u201d Arena said. \u201cThey were simply the better team. The reason for that needs to be explored a little more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201cThey dominated us physically, and the first half there were a number of cases where we created chances, created good scoring opportunities, and couldn\u2019t connect on passes. Penilla remained isolated, Bunbury never found a groove and Bou waited until the 70th minute to fire his side\u2019s first shot on goal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Arena reserved particularly harsh criticism for Penilla.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201cHe continues to be a player that it\u2019s challenging to position him in a spot he\u2019ll be productive,\u201d Arena said of the Ecuadorian. \u201cHe\u2019s an attacking player who doesn\u2019t have a goal and hasn\u2019t had an assist since the season opener, which was off a corner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201cWe\u2019re getting nothing out of him, and that\u2019s disappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Fagundez described playing with eight up front for parts of the second half, with the team finding its shape when Buksa took the field and served as a target.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Buksa finished the game with three shots and New England out-shot New York 15\u201311. That said, the final score and the Revolution players&#8217; somber post-game attitude told the full story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201cIt was not best game for us,\u201d Fagundez said. \u201cOverall we\u2019re not completing a lot of passes, not making plays happen, and that\u2019s on us. We need to be better. It\u2019s one of those games that we don\u2019t want to look back into it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote\">\u201cWhen we finished the game, Bruce said more people need to step up and be soccer players.
