{"id":25028,"date":"2019-10-26T11:33:44","date_gmt":"2019-10-26T15:33:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsoccer.com\/?p=25028"},"modified":"2019-10-26T11:33:44","modified_gmt":"2019-10-26T15:33:44","slug":"cpl-finals-preview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/2019\/10\/26\/cpl-finals-preview\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Premier League Finals: First Leg Preview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first leg of the inaugural Canadian Premier League finals kicks off in Hamilton, Ontario, on Saturday at Tim Horton&#8217;s Field.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hosts Forge FC and regular season champs Cavalry FC have met 7<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">times already in the short life of the CPL. Results are evenly split, with each team winning three times and a single draw. Forge was the only team to beat Cavalry at Spruce Meadows in CPL competition this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>High Hopes for Forge<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forge FC head coach Bobby Smyrniotis was positive when asked about taking on the spring and fall champions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe had a period over the last month where we knew where we were going. We knew which dates were going to be the most important: October 26 and November 2nd,&#8221; Smyrniotis said. &#8220;We\u2019ve had to keep our guys sharp and keep them healthy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Forge do go into this game with most of their team healthy, defensive stalwarts Dominic Samuel and Bertrand Owundi will be suspended for the first leg. Smyrniotis, though, remains bullish on his team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur goal was to play for a championship, and this is where we are right now,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forge has made its way to the championship on the backs of great performances from all of its players. Smyrniotis talked about the CONCACAF League experience as being a galvanizing moment for the team. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of players in this league last year weren\u2019t playing at a professional level,&#8221; Smyrniotis said. &#8220;We\u2019ve seen the success that our team has had on the field both domestically and internationally in <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsoccer.com\/2019\/08\/02\/forge-fc-concacaf-league\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CONCACAF league<\/a>.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smyrniotis also went on to praise his team&#8217;s performance in that competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I\u2019ll always go back to those two series with Antigua and Olimpia and they make us stronger,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;Because we\u2019re fielding 10 Canadian players in each one of those games and seven of them weren\u2019t professionals last year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of those young professionals, like Tristan Borges and goalkeeper Triston Henry, have been key contributors for Forge. When asked if the occasion was giving anyone nerves, Henry praised the Hamilton crowd, calling them \u201cthe best fans in the league.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Hamilton fans will have a chance to try and defend that claim at the first leg of the Canadian Premier League finals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>A Budding Rivalry<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The previous meetings between the Forge and Cavalry have already created a rivalry narrative before this game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of particular interest was the heated brawl after the second leg of the Canadian Championship. After that game, it was alleged that Forge assistant coach Peter Reynders used <a href=\"https:\/\/northerntribune.ca\/cavalry-fc-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">racist language<\/a> directed at Cavalry striker Jordan Brown. Reynders served a 45-day ban but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/sports-story\/9569574-forge-fc-assistant-coach-reynders-appealing-45-day-suspension-for-misconduct-\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">appealed the charge with Canada Soccer<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have also been <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsoccer.com\/2019\/05\/14\/forge-fc-fall-short-at-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">late goals<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsoccer.com\/2019\/08\/26\/forge-fc-top-the-table-with-statement-win-over-calvary\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">big game drama<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsoccer.com\/2019\/10\/10\/forge-fall-final-preview\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quality performances<\/a> in all seven of the matchups between the two teams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forge FC captain Kyle Bekker downplayed the tension between the two teams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo [these teams don\u2019t hate each other]. We each hold ourselves in high regard,&#8221; Bekker said. &#8220;Neither team wants to give an inch. We\u2019ve had some battles so far this season and I think that it all comes together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of whether the two teams \u2018hate\u2019 each other or not, the first leg is shaping up to be magnificent. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cavalry dominated the spring season, coming out as runaway winners. Things were tighter in the fall competition, but Cavalry pipped Forge in the last weeks of the season, finishing a point ahead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Cavalry Ride On<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Calgary-based Cavalry is poised to make a clean sweep of the inaugural season awards. After the spring and fall titles, a chance at the inaugural trophy is exciting for the players and coach. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s remarkable to be here,&#8221; Cavalry head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. said. &#8220;It\u2019s been the culmination of a lot of great work behind the scenes not just from our club but for the whole [league] here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cavalry FC captain Nikolas Ledgerwood is a game-time decision for the visiting side. Ledgerwood was in training this week and was excited when speaking to the media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t come here just to come here. We want to make a statement like we\u2019ve done all year,&#8221; Ledgerwood said. &#8220;Spring season winners, fall season winners, combined winners. Nobody can take that away from us and we want to add to that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cavalry will have every chance to further make their mark on CPL history over the two-legged final. Individual honours are at stake as well, though. Golden Boot leader Tristan Borges and chaser Dominique Malonga will vie for the combined total scoring lead over the final two games. When asked about the individual honours, neither said that was the focus. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI aim to win the championship,\u201d Malonga said. \u201cWe try to be champions, and after we think about other things.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Borges said much the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAny player that gets goals and assists you are looking at it as an individual, but for me, its focus on the championship and trying to win,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Both teams are poised to try and be the first to raise the <a href=\"https:\/\/canpl.ca\/article\/canadian-premier-league-unveils-its-championship-trophy-the-north-star-shield\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Star Shield<\/a>, the newly revealed champions&#8217; trophy for the Canadian Premier League finals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first leg of the inaugural Canadian Premier League finals kicks off in Hamilton, Ontario, on Saturday at Tim Horton&#8217;s Field.\u00a0 Hosts Forge FC and regular season champs Cavalry FC have met 7 times already in the short life of the CPL.
