{"id":24202,"date":"2019-08-11T21:57:37","date_gmt":"2019-08-12T01:57:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsoccer.com\/?p=24202"},"modified":"2019-08-11T21:57:37","modified_gmt":"2019-08-12T01:57:37","slug":"fc-edmonton-first-place-cpl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/2019\/08\/11\/fc-edmonton-first-place-cpl\/","title":{"rendered":"FC Edmonton Move Into First Place in CPL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>EDMONTON, AB.<\/strong> &#8211; <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fcedmonton.canpl.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FC Edmonton<\/a> got handed a big opportunity to catch <a href=\"https:\/\/cavalryfc.canpl.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cavalry FC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/york9fc.canpl.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">York 9<\/a> and move into CPL first place, as both teams failed to win on Saturday afternoon. <a href=\"https:\/\/hfxwanderersfc.canpl.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HFX Wanderers<\/a> pulled off a 0-0 draw with Cavalry, while <a href=\"https:\/\/valourfc.canpl.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Valour<\/a> toppled York 2-0, getting an extra-time game-clinching empty-net goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>FC Edmonton Move Into CPL First Place<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FC Edmonton came into their match against <a href=\"https:\/\/pacificfc.canpl.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pacific FC<\/a> on Saturday in fourth with eight points. Ahead of Edmonton were York 9 with nine points, Forge FC with 10, and Cavalry with 11 points. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pacific FC was seventh in the league due to Valour&#8217;s win on Saturday. They were looking to get ahead of Valour with three points against FC Edmonton.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FC Edmonton first place<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With three goals, the Eddies defeated Pacific FC 3-1. This win propels the team into first place with 11 points. Cavalry also has 11 points, but the Eddies have a slight lead on goal differential. Due to rescheduling of <a href=\"https:\/\/forgefc.canpl.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forge FC<\/a> matches for CONCACAF League, Cavalry has a game in hand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post-match Head Coach, Jeff Paulus, was clear about his team\u2019s intentions for the remainder of the season. \u201cWe want to be top two in overall points, so this gets us to within 4 of Forge.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this is our goal. This will be our goal until the end. That\u2019s the ambition of the club.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Easton Ongaro the difference-maker<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The young forward, Easton Ongaro, was a huge contributor to his team&#8217;s victory. Ongaro earned an assist on Oumar Diouck\u2019s first goal of the fall season in the first half. Pacific FC did not take that sitting down, and within a couple of minutes, Ben Fisk equalized the game putting the ball in after a free kick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the second half, Ongaro did not wait long to put his team back in front. In the 47th minute, he put one past Pacific goalkeeper, Nolan Wirth. Jeannot Esua\u2019s corner kick was placed nicely to Mele Temguia. Temguia put the ball on net, and Ongaro snagged the rebound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 66th minute, Ongaro seized another opportunity. Randy Edwini-Bonsu, who had subbed on in the second half, place a corner kick in the box. Ongaro put his body in front of the ball, deflecting it into the net.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is Ongaro\u2019s third consecutive match scoring, with four goals. These four goals have him tied for seventh in the league for goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the post-game press conference, Ongaro commented on his recent success. \u201cIt\u2019s exciting. I\u2019m happy to be able to contribute. Each game I\u2019ve played is another opportunity to show who I am as a player. As long as we keep winning we\u2019re happy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also noted that he had many more chances in the game, \u201cWe created a lot of chance. I think I could have had 5 myself today. We have some good momentum going.\u201d Ongaro had eight shots on goal throughout the game.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injuries<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the post-game press conference, Paulus gave updates on two injured players.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRamon was only out for today,\u201d Paulus said. \u201cIf today was a final, he would have played. If it was near the end of the season he would have played&#8230;We will have Ramon Soria back for Friday\u2019s game in Calgary.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Son Yongchan, who has been absent from the lineup since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsoccer.com\/2019\/06\/27\/fc-edmonton-win-second-in-a-row-first-at-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leaving the game against Forge FC on June 26<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be returning to training soon. In the second half of that match, Son took a hard kick from Bertrand Owundi. He left the game unable to put pressure on his right foot. Paulus confirmed that Son is \u201cprobably only a week away from full training.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upcoming Cavalry FC match important for first place<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Eddies have two options for making the <a href=\"https:\/\/canpl.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canadian Premier League<\/a> championship against Cavalry FC.\u00a0 The first way is to win the fall season at the top of the table. Should Cavalry win the fall, the other option is to be second in the overall table for the spring and fall combined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Friday, the Eddies travel to Calgary to take on Cavalry FC. This will be one of the most important editions of Al Classico this season, as a win would put the Eddies three points ahead of their southern rivals. This is important considering Cavalry will still have a game in hand following the match.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wednesday, Cavalry FC will be home to the Major League Soccer\u2019s Montreal Impact in the Canadian Championship. Cavalry currently sits down 2-1 in the two-game aggregate against the Impact.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With only a day\u2019s rest before Cavalry hosts the Eddies and their draw on Saturday against the Wanderers, Edmonton will be looking to take advantage of a potentially weary opponent.
