href=\"https:\/\/fcedmonton.canpl.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FC Edmonton<\/a> hosted <a href=\"https:\/\/valourfc.canpl.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Valour FC<\/a> from Winnipeg on Wednesday evening for their Fall Season home opener in the <a href=\"https:\/\/canpl.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canadian Premier League<\/a>.\u00a0 This CPL weather delay match a second match between these two teams.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>CPL Weather Delay: Valour FC Match vs Edmonton<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Wednesday evening, kickoff did not occur for approximately one hour after the scheduled seven o\u2019clock time.\u00a0 There had been a thunderstorm rolling through the city prior to the match which caused the delay due to lightning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Spring Season, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsoccer.com\/2019\/06\/02\/fc-edmonton-lose-third-consecutive\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first time Valour FC had visited Clarke Stadium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the game had been postponed a day due to thick smoke from forest fires northwest of Edmonton.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brief start before another delay<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After only eight minutes of play, the officials suspended action due to another storm cell moving through Edmonton.\u00a0 Fans evacuated the stadium ahead of heavy rain, wind, and lightning.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 9:45 pm the match resumed after a nearly two-hour delay.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communication staff at the game said that there had been a meeting between team and league officials to decide what would happen.\u00a0 If the match not started by 10 pm, the game would have been postponed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accordingly, media were been informed about Canadian Premier League rules regarding game delays.\u00a0 The match is deemed final if delayed after the 70-minute mark.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media Pro and OneSoccer pack up and leave<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mediaprocanada.tv\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mediapro<\/a>, the Spanish company that has 10-year production rights on all CPL matches, amongst other Canadian soccer content, and <a href=\"https:\/\/onesoccer.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OneSoccer,<\/a> the streaming service that broadcasts the matches, packed up and left Clarke Stadium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As fans were being allowed back in the stadium and the players were coming back out onto the field to warm up after the weather delay, camera crews were seen packing up equipment.\u00a0 Crews were picking up microphones, dismantling cameras, and wrapping up cables.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OneSoccer.ca had initially <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/onesoccerhelp\/status\/1151700841931386880\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported on Twitter that the broadcast was about to resume once the game started, again<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, through their OneSoccer Help account.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the game had already resumed and cameras had been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lwos_joe\/status\/1151702192186769408\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">packed up and gone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lwos_joe\/status\/1151700290816499713\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">camera stands sitting empty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Eventually, OneSoccer.ca let expectant fans know <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/onesoccer\/status\/1151702368775495680\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that the broadcast would not continue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last Word on Soccer reached out to the Canadian Premier League and OneSoccer.ca to confirm the reason why the film crews left the game.\u00a0 No response was received by press time.\u00a0 However, OneSoccer did <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/onesoccer\/status\/1151923609939730432\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post this tweet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Thursday explaining that the weather conditions had made it unsafe for their crews to continue.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It leaves one to wonder why it was safe for the teams to resume play, the fans to return to the stadium, and the camera crew that operated the large screen at the stadium to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another possibility that had been put out on Twitter was that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GreysonKnutson\/status\/1151705532643680257\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crew had to leave to make it to another planned event by a specific time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The absence of OneSoccer at the post-game press conference didn\u2019t go unnoticed by Head Coach Jeff Paulus, as he started off the conference by asking, \u201cWhere\u2019s OneSoccer by the way? They\u2019re not here for this?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commenting on the impact to the players the delay had, Paulus mentioned that, \u201cIt is tough on the players.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eddies\u2019 goalkeeper James said, \u201cIt was a real difficult mental challenge\u201d waiting to find out if they were going to play or not over the nearly two-hour delay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valour FC Head Coach Robert Gale spoke to the fact that players eat mid-afternoon, and with not kicking off until 10 pm, that it\u2019s difficult to keep the energy reserves up.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbits ensue<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the match resumed, play continued with no further delays due to weather.\u00a0 There <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FCEdmontonNow\/status\/1151719355115171840\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were a few minor delays later in the game as a rabbit had managed to find it\u2019s way onto the pitch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 A few times officials needed to pause the match as players attempted to herd the small creature off the pitch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eddie fans historically see a rabbit on the pitch as good luck. On Wednesday, the rabbit on the pitch didn\u2019t help either side as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The match<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edmonton was home after two games on the road and third spot in the table.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsoccer.com\/2019\/07\/08\/forge-fc-fall-opener\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their first match was against Forge FC in Hamilton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the Eddies won 2-1 despite only registering one shot on net.\u00a0 On Sunday, they were playing against York 9 FC. York 9 managed to take that match 2-1 to give FC Edmonton their first loss of the Fall Season and keep their winning streak at four matches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losing to York on the weekend, plus the fact that the Nine-stripes beat Pacific FC earlier on Wednesday, contributed to the Eddies third-place ranking.\u00a0 They had three points prior to the match starting &#8211; behind York 9\u2019s six points.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head-to-head against Valour<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Spring Season, these two teams met up twice.\u00a0 In the Eddies\u2019 first game ever in the CPL, they defeated Valour 2-1 in Winnipeg on May 4th.\u00a0 The second contest between these two took place on June 2nd in Edmonton.\u00a0 Valour FC took that match 1-0.\u00a0 The last time Valour won a match was that game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wednesday\u2019s match was Valour FC\u2019s first match of the Fall.\u00a0 Valour FC came into the match on a six-game losing streak over four league matches and two Voyageur Cup matches.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FC Edmonton line-up changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was only one change in the lineup on Wednesday evening.\u00a0 Kareem Moses came into the midfield in place of Marcus Velado-Tsegaye.\u00a0 Velado-Tsegaye had been in that spot against York 9 FC.\u00a0 Philippe Lincourt-Joseph had that position against Forge FC.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lineup has proven to remain very stable since the final game of the Spring Season against HFX Wanderers.\u00a0 The match prior to that saw both Amer Didic and Son Yongchang leave the game against Forge FC on June 26th in Edmonton.\u00a0 Both suffered injuries, and have not been back since.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Numerous chances but no goals<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both sides had numerous chances to score but could not put one in the net.\u00a0 Both goalkeepers, Tyson Farago for Valour FC, and Connor James for the Eddies made numerous saves to register clean sheets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bruno Zebie had a couple of chances on net.\u00a0 A Valour defender tackled Zebie in the box on his second attempt at driving the net.\u00a0 Paulus had stated after the game that several players on Wednesday had taken too many touches at times.\u00a0 He highlighted Zebie\u2019s attempt in the box as one of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moses also had a couple of headers.\u00a0 Both missed the goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valour FC chances came from Tyler Attardo and Skylar Thomas putting headers over the net.\u00a0 Meanwhile, Bustos put a shot on goal, with James getting in front of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Last Word<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both the Eddies and Valour FC came out of this match with a point. The Eddies are now one point ahead of HFX and remain in fourth place.\u00a0 Meanwhile, Valour gets their first point of the Fall table, putting them in 6th, ahead of the 0-3 Pacific FC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fall Season is much longer than the Spring Season was.\u00a0 Teams will be playing 18 matches versus the 10 they played in the first half.\u00a0 Now that most teams have found their bearings, they all are searching for the Fall title.\u00a0 Every team wants to play against Cavalry FC for the championship.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expect it to be a tight race in the second half of the year.\u00a0 Despite Cavalry FC\u2019s dominance in the Spring, many of their games were close.\u00a0 A few of their wins came late in the game or in extra time.
