After coming back from a 1-0 deficit to take the lead, they lost that lead as quickly as they took it, as Colombia won 4-2.

USMNT Lose to Colombia

From the kickoff, Colombia sought to exploit the left flank of the USMNT. Running right at Antonee Robinson, the Colombian side had little resistance. It seemed like only a matter of time before they would take the lead as the USMNT had little success going forward, and couldn’t hold onto the ball.

Little ball possession for the USMNT resulted in a lot of chances for Colombia. The Cafateros more than tripled the USMNT in shot attempts, and held 62% possession. It was a thoroughly dominating performance from the Colombians. James Rodriguez gave the Colombians the 1-0 lead in the 39th minute.

The USMNT came roaring back at the start of the first half though. Robinson’s best moment of the game was his cross that was flicked to the empty space at the back post, and Kellyn Acosta’s delayed run was rewarded as he blasted home the first time volley to even the scoreline. Then three minutes later, Tim Weah went on a run on the counter. His wonderful slipped ball into Bobby Wood served the striker on a platter and the USMNT took a 2-1 lead.

That lead didn’t hold for long though as Carlos Bacca equalized three minutes later. Radamel Falcao then took the feed from Bacca, who held up the ball well, and made it 3-2. Miguel Angel Borja’s overhead kick made in 4-2 and that was all she wrote.

Three Things

Antonee Robinson is a real prospect at left back, but he’s clearly not a serious option at left back for their backline. They’ll need to figure out who that is until Robinson can hold his own. He does fine against lower tiered opposition, but right now, he’s getting burnt by the high end players. That’s reasonable for a young prospect, especially on the defensive side. But when it comes to the bigger games, they’ll need to find a solution there.

Tim Weah is a baller. Weah’s pass to Bobby Wood was fantastic, and well beyond his years. The most of his prospects that we’ve seen has been the dribbling and finishing. But, that deft pass to play in Wood was brilliant, and shows his creative ability is starting to come to a fruition.

Bobby Wood scored a goal! Wood may be the main striker for a majority of the player pool and his form, two goals in the Bundesliga over the weekend and a goal tonight, is nice to see. He has talent, and he’s only 25, leaving him in his prime for the next world cup. If he can become a real option going forward, it will help the USMNT find another threat outside of Pulisic.

TAMPA BAY, Fla.- The USMNT dropped their first of two friendlies in this international period.
