The second-half strike made all of the difference for the home team beating the Eastern Conference number one seed New York Red Bulls. While Red Bull fans will surely be wringing their hands from a number of missed chances, the result still bodes well for NY.

Impact Sink Red Bulls On Matteo Mancosu Strike

The game started at a frantic pace with RBNY finding a number of good chances early. Bradley Wright-Phillips was at the center of it all, nearly chipping Evan Bush on a breakaway. The Impact goalkeeper did well to anticipate the move and covered it. In total, BWP would miss three solid chances, as well as having a legitimate penalty shout denied.

Jesse Marsch remained positive after the game.

“In certain areas I think our team played well and was organized,” Marsch noted. “Then it was basically one play that cost us even though we had what I thought was a good control of the match. Even though we had some really good advantages, we couldn’t convert any of them.”

In the second half, New York began to dominate the game with superior chances and possession. Montreal would ultimately make them pay by with Mancosu’s strike in the 61st minute. A well-played ball over the top found the Italian striker free of his marker Damien Perrinelle. Mancosu took the chance first time and buried it past Louis Robles.

Moving Forward

The Red Bulls perked up in the second half with the entry of Gonzalo Veron. The attack managed to create a number of opportunities they were unable to put away. Wright-Phillips ultimately missed an open net in extra-time. Veron worked the ball to the end line and centered the ball to Omer Damari. The on loan DP striker put his shot at goal. The shot deflected to Bradley, but the golden boot winner could not put it in the net.

Just before the final whistle, Damari earned a sending off for a reckless challenge on Calum Mallace. The red card means Damari will sit the return leg. Depending on the result, he may not play again this season.

The Red Bulls return home and will look to reverse their fortunes. Montreal’s previous two games at Red Bull Arena were losses (3-1, and 1-0). While the fans may be down, the team remains confident, as does coach Jesse Marsch.

“Given everything, I think we put a lot into it and we know it’s only halftime and there’s a lot more to go in this series,” the Red Bulls manager emphasized. “We’ll be excited to go back home.”

Embed from Getty Images

Montreal Impact Sink Red Bulls on Mancosu strike.
