{"id":10440,"date":"2017-10-13T11:18:58","date_gmt":"2017-10-13T15:18:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lwosonsoccer.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/?p=10440"},"modified":"2017-10-13T11:18:58","modified_gmt":"2017-10-13T15:18:58","slug":"bruce-arena-resigns-usmnt-manager","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/soccer\/2017\/10\/13\/bruce-arena-resigns-usmnt-manager\/","title":{"rendered":"Bruce Arena Resigns from post as USMNT Manager after WCQ Failure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chicago (October 13, 2017)- Bruce Arena has resigned as manager of the USMNT in the wake of their failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup Finals.<\/p>\n<h1>Bruce Arena Resigns as USMNT Manager<\/h1>\n<p>Bruce Arena resigned from his duties as USMNT manager today, in a statement released by US Soccer. <em>&#8220;It is the greatest privilege for any coach to manage their country&#8217;s National Team, and as I leave that role today, I am honored and grateful to have that opportunity twice in my career&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Arena took over for his second stint as manager of the USMNT on November 16, 2016 after <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonsoccer.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2016\/11\/21\/us-soccer-fires-jurgen-klinsmann\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jurgen Klinsmann was relieved<\/a> of his duties as USMNT Technical Director, and Manager. Arena led the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fifa.com\/worldcup\/archive\/koreajapan2002\/matches\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2002 USMNT<\/a> to the Quarterfinals, where they lost to Germany by the score of 1-0. He also guided the USMNT to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fifa.com\/worldcup\/archive\/germany2006\/matches\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2006 World Cup<\/a> where they got bounced in the group stage.<\/p>\n<p>Arena&#8217;s men failed to qualify after the <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonsoccer.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2017\/10\/10\/united-states-eliminated-from-2018-world-cup-trinidad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2-1 loss to Trinidad and Tobago<\/a> on Tuesday night. Arena&#8217;s resignation was expected by most, and this likely won&#8217;t shock many. His contract was up after the 2018 World Cup.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;This certainly is a major setback for the senior Men&#8217;s National Team program, and questions rightly should be asked about how we can improve,&#8221; <\/em>said Arena<em>. &#8220;No doubt this process already has started and will continue so that U.S. Soccer can progress.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>US Soccer President, Sunil Gulati, is going to address the media at 11:30et today to discuss the USMNT program and the failure to reach the 2018 World Cup.<\/p>\n<h3>What does this mean going forward?<\/h3>\n<p>Clearly it signals changes, but this was the most obvious of the moves that needed to take place after the match against Trinidad and Tobago. Ultimately, it would be great to see a real technical director appointed, and a good one at that, who then hires the new manager.
