From midfield destroyer to false nine and everything in between, the game has a variety of moving parts that guarantee a given team’s success on the pitch. Inverted winger is another of those technical terms which permeate the modern game.

Inverted Winger Combo Proving Lethal for Columbus Crew SC

So what is the most apt description of an inverted winger? Specifically, it involves a player who primarily operates out wide on the side of the field opposite their dominant foot. For example, a right footed player stationed on the left qualifies for this role. One of the things this does is it enables such players to tuck inside of opposing defenders and utilize their strongest foot in the process.

Columbus Crew SC demonstrated the effectiveness of having inverted wingers at their best in Saturday’s 2-0 win over D.C. United. The result clinched a playoff berth for the Black and Gold, erasing the sting of last year’s forgettable campaign. Justin Meram’s 56th minute tally, his career-high 13th on the season, perfectly encapsulated the lethality of such a player.

Notice how Meram initially receives a well-placed pass from Artur (after a nifty dummy from Hector Jimenez) from just outside the box. He then dribbles towards goal and conveniently notices that Sean Franklin is failing to adequately close him down. When you do that to a player of Meram’s caliber, more often than not he’ll make you pay, as evidenced by the above golazo.

For a player who’s in the midst of arguably his best ever form, it’s simply business as usual. But it’s testament to the rapport he has with his teammates, especially given the move Jimenez made to let the ball trickle towards him.

“(I was) not surprised about the accuracy (of the goal),” Meram told the Columbus Dispatch after the game. “I work (at it) a lot and Hector makes a great heads-up play to let it go and it comes to me in a spot I’m comfortable with.”

Though he didn’t register a goal or assist on Saturday night, Meram’s partner in crime on the other side of the field in Pedro Santos proved dangerous in spots. The Portuguese designated player has already proven his quality as a provider from wide areas in previous games. He has two assists and six chances created since joining Crew SC.

Part of any wide attacking midfielder’s effectiveness is their ability to provide solid link up play with the fullbacks. If they do this, it makes a team that much more dangerous from the standpoint of creating consistent width. On Saturday, Santos and right back Harrison Afful provided that presence with their movement and ability to combine with one another.

“There’s no secret that our wing play (and) our wide play is a big part of our game,” Crew SC head coach and sporting director Gregg Berhalter emphasized. “And we need that presence to disorganize the opponent, and today I think (Santos and Afful) had it working.”

With a playoff appearance guaranteed, the next step is finishing the season strong and maintaining momentum. And the continued effervescence of the Crew SC inverted winger combo in the final third must play a part. It’s one of many keys towards a repeat performance of 2015’s magical playoff run.

Photo credit: Columbus Crew SC Communications

Columbus Crew SC’s 2-0 win over D.C.
