Seattle scores early but CFMTL responds

CF Montreal got the first shot of the game on target in the first minute as Matko Miljevic managed to get one on goal but it went right into the hands of Stefan Frei. Two minutes later Seattle took the early 1-0 lead as Jordan Morris got a long pass and beat Sebastien Breza.

In the 8th minute, Morris was at it again as he found himself alone with the ball facing Breza but couldn’t get a shot off, and again the visitors were facing pressure and dangerous situations. Five minutes later Montreal earned a corner but Miljevic’s cross was punched away by Frei.

Mason Toye tied the game in the 18th minute as Kei Kamara who was able to steal the ball and on a two-on-one situation found Toye who beat Frei with a powerful shot. 12 minutes later it looked like Montreal was starting to take control of the game and pushed putting pressure on the home side.

Miljevic tested Frei once again in the 33rd minute with a shot from distance but the keeper was able to make the save as he dove to block the ball. That was the last shot of the first half as after one minute of additional time both teams went to the locker room tied at one.

Cristian Roldan almost regained Seattle’s lead in the opening minute of the second half and was able to get a shot on target from just inside the box but Breza was able to make the save to keep the ball out. Toye almost scored his second of the game in the 58th minute as he headed a cross on target but Frei was able to block the ball and make the save.

Montreal took the lead in the 62nd minute as Toye got his second of the game with a great feed from Kamara once again and beat Frei with a great kick and moments later head coach Wilfried Nancy made two changes bringing on Zachary Brault Guillard and Romell Quioto for Mason Toye and Lassi Lappalainen.

Nancy made his third change in the 70th minute taking out Miljevic for Samuel Piette looking to shut the game down defensively. Robert Thokelson and Joaquin Torres entered the game in the 76th minute for Kamara and Ismael Kone who went down with a cramp.

Breza continued to shut the door and in the 85th minute off a corner, he made a diving save and managed to punch the ball out of danger. Morris tested Breza again four minutes later as he headed a ball on target but again went right into the hands of Breza.

With four minutes of time added to the 90, Seattle pushed for the equalizer but Breza again stood tall in the net making a save on Yeimar off a corner as he was able to get a quick shot from close but it was too little too late as the final whistle blew and CF Montreal had secured the win.

Coach reaction

Head coach Wilfried Nancy was pleased with the win but admits the performance wasn’t perfect.

” To be honest I was disappointed about the goal we conceded because everything happened so quickly and we didn’t adjust in the moment but after five minutes the way we started to play I was ok and I knew that something could happen and the possibility to score and that’s what happened and tonight was a collective effort from everybody and this is the most important thing”.

Player reaction

Kei Kamara who had two assists tonight which were his 49th and his 50th of his career spoke about how pleased he was with his team’s performance and the way they were able to bounce back and win.

” Sometimes it’s good when it happens early and it kinda wakes you up and slaps you in the face and obviously in Seattle it could go either way and it lets us know we aren’t here to cruise by and they are a good team and we pressed well and after that, we were able to control the ball and it gave us confidence”.

Mason Toye who was the hero of the night also spoke about how his team was able to pull off a big win against a very tough opponent.

” We had fantastic resiliency and after we conceded that early goal you could see a couple of heads go down but we got back into it and we knew it was a long game and we had to stick to our game plan and that’s what we did and we had confidence in each other and the game plan and we just kept pushing and getting that goal back in the first half was really big and I felt we dominated tonight”

CF Montreal will be back in action on Monday, July 4th as they will travel to Los Angeles to face the Galaxy on Monday night.
