Massimiliano Allegri keen on Weston McKennie staying at Juventus

TURIN, Italy – The name of Weston McKennie has been tossed around with several European clubs in recent weeks, but Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri expects the midfielder to stay in Turin for the time being.

Allegri backs McKennie to stay with Juventus and improve his game as the new Serie A season heads into its second week. McKennie was suspended for last weekend’s season-opening 2-2 draw with Udinese but is eligible to feature in Saturday’s home clash with Empoli.

The U.S. men’s national team midfielder has been linked with Tottenham, Aston Villa, Everton, and even Bayern Munich with Juventus’ asking price close to €30-40 million. McKennie still has a great opportunity to work with an experienced manager like Allegri in Turin and feature in several competitions, including the UEFA Champions League.

Allegri doesn’t rule out a transfer for McKennie but also isn’t expecting the midfielder to leave.

“He doesn’t have to leave. He has goals in his legs,” Allegri said in a press conference on Friday. “He must improve, he’s an attacking player and we are in very good shape in this department.”

McKennie scored six goals and registered three assists in his first full season with the Old Lady last season, helping the club qualify once again for the UCL and also bring home two domestic trophies. The 22-year-old will find several teammates looking to earn minutes in the heart of Allegri’s midfield, but competition for a starting role could be positive for Texas native going forward.

The Premier League clubs have until 11 p.m. BST on August 31 to agree to a deal for McKennie’s services before the summer transfer window closes shut. McKennie will look to feature for the Old Lady this weekend before embarking to the United States for the start of Concacaf World Cup Qualifying.

Gregg Berhalter’s side will face off with El Salvador in the first of 14 qualifying matches from September 2021-March 2022.
