Five favorites to win the MLS MVP award in 2020

MLS MVP

Editorial — Major League Soccer has just begun its 25th season, and there is a lot on the line this year. This includes questions around who will lead the league in scoring, who will make it to the playoffs, and who will win the MVP award. In this article, we are going to list our five favorites to win the 2020 MLS MVP Award.

1. Carlos Vela (Los Angeles FC)

Last year, Carlos Vela scored an MLS-record 34 goals and had 15 assists. The fact that he was able to both score and assist at the highest frequency in the MLS set him apart from his peers. That’s why he is the reigning MLS MVP. Many feel he can repeat this year and win the Golden Boot again.

No one has ever repeated as the MLS Most Valuable Player, but that doesn’t mean Vela cannot be the first one who does. It helps that the Los Angeles FC looks like an excellent team this year. Many also predict them to win the West behind Coach Bob Bradley. Teammates like Brian Rodriguez and Diego Rossi are sure to help Vela this year as well.

2. Alejandro Pozuelo (Toronto FC)

Alejandro Pozuelo showed up in Toronto just before the 2019 season. He had a breakout season in 2019, scoring 12 goals and 12 assists in 2524 minutes. Only three players last year scored double-digit goals and assists: Pozuleo, Vela and Charles Gil. Last year, Pozuelo did not begin playing until March 4. He also had previously played 78 consecutive games before the 2019 season, dating back to July 26, 2018. This season, he has had more rest and his legs should be a lot fresher. He has looked sharp this season and looks like he might compete with Vela for the MVP this year.

3. Raul Ruidiaz

Raul Ruidiaz is an explosive player for the Seattle Sounders FC. The Peruvian striker has scored 22 goals in 38 appearances. The last two seasons have seen Ruidiaz lead the club in scoring over players like Jordan Morris and Nicolas Lodeiro. Ruidiaz, who is entering his third season with the Sounders, will look to go for a third year of leading the Sounders in scoring.

4. Javier Hernandez (Los Angeles Galaxy)

Javier Hernandez is in his first season with the Los Angeles Galaxy. The talented striker is Mexico’s most dynamic scorer in international play, with 52 goals in 109 appearances. Even though he is playing for the Galaxy, he remains open to returning to play for the Mexico national team in the future. He scored the first goal in Mexico’s 3-0 win against the United States on Sept. 9, 2019. If he does stay on to help the Los Angeles Galaxy full-time, he is definitely a serious contender to win the MLS MVP award.

5. Maximiliano Moralez (New York City FC)

Maximiliano Moralez is a midfielder for the New York City FC. He led the entire MLS in 2019 with 20 assists. His creativity sets him apart from the competition. He is poised to have another big season. If he scores more goals this year and continues to lead the league in assists, he has an excellent chance to win the MVP award.

Major League Soccer fans around the world are extremely excited that the 2020 has finally started. They are undoubtedly following the players we’ve listed above very closely. Many die-hard fans are even placing bets on their favorite teams at trusted online sports books.
