Major League Soccer enters its 25th season in 2020 and its humble beginnings are often lost on many of the people who follow the American and Canadian top flight of soccer. Distancing MLS from its early years in which few channels wanted to air its games — and few people wanted to watch them –is the news that the league will be the world’s most viewed soccer division in the world in 2020. The new MLS season promises to be as unpredictable as ever when it kicked off on February 29. MLS fans anticipated the debut game of Nashville SC versus Atlanta United. MLS growing its reach around the world

MLS will be televised in 190 countries which makes it the world’s most available to watch soccer league. MLS confirmed that channels DAZN, FOX, CTV, and ESPN will be the main broadcasters of its games. The four networks reach far and wide allowing MLS games to be broadcast around the globe. The current MLS television rights deal is marketed and distributed by IMG and runs through the 2022 season.

Helping make MLS available to soccer fans around the globe is the melting pot of talent it possesses. The soccer league attracts players young and old from all corners of the globe. The assortment of nationalities in MLS influences television channels in a variety of nations to televise games.

In addition, MLS will welcome its 25th and 26th teams to the competition this season. The number of teams means a large player pool is required. MLS has the largest number of teams of any major top flight league. To accommodate such a large number of soccer teams, MLS clubs must scout and sign players from all over the globe. The wide net the clubs in MLS must cast is another reason the diversity of nationalities is so large.

MLS around North America

The soccer league is currently aired on three networks in the United States. Broadcasts in the US are split between ESPN, Fox Sports, and Univision with the latter of the three showing games in Spanish.

Teams are also able to work out their own local television deals allowing regional channels to air matches. However, with MLS seeking to land a new television rights deal in the future, clubs have been informed not to negotiate or accept any deals with local networks for after this season.

MLS currently receives $90 million per year in domestic television rights fee. The America and Canadian soccer league is pushing hard to increase its rights fee for its next television deal. A growing need for sports content readily available to television networks should see the value of MLS’s television rights increase in the US alone.

The English Premier League currently receives $12 billion for its television rights. Although MLS will fall far from reaching that figure, the league could hit the nine-digit financial mark for its next television rights contract.
