Editorial — The January transfer window is a difficult time for MLS teams to sign European-based players competing in the top five leagues on the continent. Here are the five footballers that should be on every MLS teams’ radar in 2020.
Adam Lallana (Liverpool)
Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana will turn 32 in May. After several years of injuries limiting his match time, it’s likely the Reds will part ways with him. Lallana has been a good player for the club since arriving in 2014. According to reports in Italy, Callejón is still not satisfied and could leave in the summer. Although Napoli will have some promising matches to play if they qualify for next season’s Champions League, Callejón could walk away.
Callejón, who turns 33 in February, joined Napoli in 2013 from Real Madrid. He has been a great player for the club. However, with a possible rebuild to take place, he could head to North American for the right price.
David Silva (Manchester City)
MLS may have already pulled off a coup as expansion franchise Inter Miami are said to have a verbal agreement from Manchester City midfielder David Silva. The aging Spanish playmaker is leaving Manchester City as the club needs a rebuild all over the pitch. The Cityzens’ loss will be a huge gain for a first-year franchise. If Silva can stay fit, Inter Miami will have one of Manchester City’s all-time greats in the squad.
Jordon Ibe (Bournemouth)
Winger Jordon Ibe joined Liverpool in 2012 from Wycombe Wanderers during a transition period at Anfield. He played just 41 league matches for the Reds but turned enough heads that Liverpool accepted £15 million from Bournemouth for him in the summer of 2016.
Since moving to Bournemouth, Ibe’s career has gone off the rails. He has scored just four goals in three and a half seasons and is unwanted by the Cherries. MLS could be the right fit for the once-promising winger to get his career back on track.
Olivier Giroud (Chelsea)
It seems that every club wants Olivier Giroud except for Chelsea and they may need him the most. Giroud’s contract will expire in the summer and initially, it was believed the World Cup winner would move to MLS. However, a move to the US could be put on hold. Former manager Antonio Conte is interested in bringing Giroud to Inter Milan.
