Lalas Abubakar Own Goal Downs Colorado Rapids at San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. (July 27, 2019) – A Lalas Abubakar own goal was just the start of a bad night for Colorado Rapids. Some great wide play and a moment of brilliance from Vako got San Jose Earthquakes another home win.

San Jose showed their quality and form in the first half. It took them less than two minutes to open the scoring.

Some good quick passing Cristian Espinoza on the edge of the box. He sent a cross to the middle towards Chris Wondolowski. Abubakar tried to prevent a tap in for the captain, but put the ball into his own net.

Vako doubled the advantage in the 34th minute. Nick Lima worked hard to separate from Sam Nicholson on the wing then found Vako in the box. The Georgian danced around in the box to create a shooting channel, then threaded the ball between defenders and past goalkeeper Clint Irwin inside the bottom corner.

Colorado’s best chances came on the counter and set pieces. Nicholson had a few half chances, but wasn’t able to produce anything dangerous. Diego Rubio tangled with Judson on a corner and was called for a foul, despite Judson at one point having his arms around the striker.

The second half was less exciting with Colorado unable to produce anything dangerous. Substitute Andre Shinyashiki had a good look inside the box in the 51st minute but sent it right to Daniel Vega. It appeared that Jonathan Lewis made it 2-1 but Sam Vines was offside on the sequence.

Shea Salinas and Diego Rubio each had a goal in garbage time. The match ended 3-1.

Three Takeaways:

No Plan B: The Rapids attack under Conor Casey has been very simple: Counter attacking and set pieces. The Rapids were overrun on the wings in this game and didn’t get many chances on restarts.

Lalas Abubakar own goal: It wasn’t the best night for Abubakar. His own goal highlighted a poor night of marking and gap control from Colorado.

Quakes on the wings: San Jose have been on a fantastic run of form, including their wide players. The attacking wings and fullbacks all had great performances at both ends.
