Seattle, Washington (July 18, 2019) — There’s an old saying in football. If you want to play against the best, compete against the best and be the best, your destination is Europe. The Seattle Sounders FC got a taste of Europe on Wednesday night, hosting German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.

The two sides teamed up for the contest. For Seattle, the match gave some players that aren’t used to seeing many minutes time on the pitch. However, even if the Sounders didn’t gain a win — instead they fell 3-1 — players got needed exposure.

Seattle Sounders gain exposure, but fall to Borussia Dortmund, 3-1

One of those players was Jonathan Campbell.

Joining this season from the Chicago Fire, Campbell was never a permanent starter in MLS. Instead, he joined a centerback grouping that had a stalwart partnership of Chad Marshall and Kim Kee-hee. Meanwhile, behind those players was Roman Torres. Now, even though Marshall is retired, the Sounders added Xavier Arreaga from Ecuador to the mix.

Campbell saw time with the Tacoma Defiance, though. He was one of a handful of Sounders players to sign a dual contract with the Sounders and Defiance. However, in MLS, Campbell has only made two appearances.

His goal came in the 54th minute, as Joevin Jones notched the assist. After the match, Campbell said Dortmund showing their quality was good to see.

“To celebrate with the fans and get one here against Borussia is awesome,” Campbell said. “I was pumped. It was a surreal moment… Chad Marshall kept telling me to get a header. I finally got one for him. I give him all the credit for it. Made a slight movement going forward and then went back post. Great ball from Joevin and I was able to put it in.”

Meanwhile, Dortmund found the back of the net three times. Marius Wolf got the scoring started in the 37th minute, off a ball from Mario Götze. Meanwhile, Paco Alcácer opened up the second half scoring in the 50th minute. Jadon Sancho, the 19-year-old from England, put home the game-winning goal in the 77th minute.

Make a Wish for Bheem Goyal

Bheem Goyal is a die-hard Sounders fan.

The 8-year-old was diagnosed with leukemia and is fighting his battle every day. However, he was given a break to join the Seattle Sounders for training and the Dortmund match. As part of Make A Wish, Goyal got to train with Stefan Frei and Bryan Meredith, Sounders goalkeepers.

He was put in goal at the beginning of the match. As soon as the ball kicked off the start of the match, Dortmund sent it rolling to Goyal, who made a pass up front to Arreaga. However, he was then subbed off for Meredith, who featured for the rest of the night.

It’s just one way the Sounders have been part of Make a Wish. Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer said that the film didn’t do justice and that Goyal looked even happier than what was shown.

“That kid had a really good time, and those guys [Stefan Frei, Bryan Meredith and goalkeeper coach Tom Dutra] did a good job,” Schmetzer said. “It was something special.”

What’s Next? 

Seattle returns back to league play against arch rival, Portland, on Sunday. The match will be held at CenturyLink Field and 9:30 p.m. EST/6:30 p.m. PT.
