Toronto, Canada (July 18, 2019) — Fresh from a win in the latest Hudson River Derby, the New York Red Bulls traveled to BMO Field. Toronto FC hosted the Red Bulls for a midweek clash. On a warm and humid night, the Red Bulls fell, 3-1.
Defensive Dynamics
With Tim Parker back in the lineup, the Red Bulls return to a familiar back line. While Amro Tarek provided depth, manager Chris Armas opted for his usual back four. However, a pair of first half yellow cards unsettled the defense. Michael Amir Murillo (23′) and Kemar Lawrence (25′) were booked, the latter giving Toronto a kick from the spot.
Altidore, Pozuelo Open Scoring
In just the sixth minute, American striker Jozy Altidore scored the first goal of the night. His back-heel shot hit the far post and angled into the net. Vincent Bezecourt nearly answered three minutes later with a volley off a corner kick. However, Alejandro Pozuelo doubled the lead, converting a penalty kick in the 26th minute. Overall, the Red Bulls were stretched wide in the first half. Alejandro “Kaku” Romero Gamarra and Cristian Casseres Jr. made strong runs on goal but could not find the back of the net.

Redoubled Effort in the Second Half
The Red Bulls, determined to make a good showing, came out in the second half with new determination. Within minutes, Marc Rzatkowski and Bezecourt made several attempts on goal. Meanwhile, it was Tom Barlow (64′) who finally broke through. Substitute Derrick Etienne, Jr. crossed the ball at the face of the goal for Barlow to tap in. Armas brought his most notable attacking options out in an attempt to save a point. Bradley Wright-Phillips and Daniel Royer took the field to redouble the efforts. Toronto attacker Ashtone Morgan outmaneuvered Murillo and Robles to regain the two-goal lead (72′).

What’s Next?
The Red Bulls continue their road trip, taking on Orlando City on Sunday. Toronto comes to Harrison Aug. 3 for the rematch.
