New York Red Bulls slip in midweek loss to Montreal Impact

An injury to Aaron Long late in the match startled the New York Red Bulls as they lost at home to the Montreal Impact on Wednesday night.
Red Bulls loss

Harrison, New Jersey (May 8, 2019) — Coming off a high-impact win against the LA Galaxy, the New York Red Bulls welcome the Montreal Impact to Red Bull Arena. This is the last of a three-match home stand for New York.

Prior to the 3-2 win against Galaxy, New York defeated FC Cincinnati, 1-0.

Barlow Debut

Forward Tom Barlow, just hours after his first team signing was announced, made his first start for the Red Bulls. Keeping his USL jersey number, he played 74 minutes. He made several runs on goal, getting long passes from Kemar Lawrence and Marc Rzatkowski.

In the 33rd minute, Barlow made a run on goal but was squeezed out by the Impact defense. He had another shot on goal in the 38th minute, but Impact goalkeeper Evan Bush bodied the ball up and over the net. He showed the style and caliber of play that will bring him back to the first team pitch.

Opening 45 for New York

Just eight minutes in, the Red Bulls found their first real opportunity. Daniel Royer found a shot after a breakaway up the left channel. Bush took hold of the ball to end the play.

The next chances came to Alex Muyl’s head from Rzatkowski’s free kick in the 14th minute. Near the 20th minute mark, Impact midfielder Omar Browne made an advance against the run of play. However, he ultimately hit the side netting. Moments later, Impact forward Maximiliano Urruti sent a shot over the Red Bull crossbar. Another opportunity came for Montreal at the half hour mark, but the Red Bulls recovered the ball.

Defender Aaron Long redirected Rzatkowski’s free kick in the 36th minute to open his 2019 account. The 2018 MLS Defender of the Year angled the ball past Bush to put the Red Bulls ahead at the half.

Unsettled Second Half

However, the lead didn’t last.

The Impact were determined to turn the tide in the second half. Play grew increasingly aggressive. In the 64th minute, a header from Zakaria Diallo leveled the match. Manager Chris Armas brought out Alejandro “Kaku” Romero Gamarra and Omir Fernandez for a renewed attack.

This was Kaku’s first match following a three-game suspension. With their entrance, the game’s tempo picked up. An aggressive tackle in the box afforded Urruti a penalty kick in the 78th minute. His conversion gave Montreal the lead.

A late injury to defender Long had the Red Bulls down a player in the last 10 minutes of the game. While the team tried to bring things level again, the Red Bulls fell to the Montreal Impact, 1-2.

What’s Next?

For the Red Bulls, it’s a quick turn around on Saturday to face FC Dallas on the road. The match will begin at 2 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, the Impact will head to Ohio to face FC Cincinnati on Saturday at 1 p.m.
