New York Red Bulls Stumble in 1-0 Loss to New England Revolution

Red Bulls Stumble

Foxboro, MA. (April 20, 2019) – On a rainy night in Foxboro, the New York Red Bulls did battle with the New England Revolution. Wearing their Parley kits, they had to do without several usual starters. A late strike by the home team was the lone goal of the match, and the Red Bulls stumble gave the Revolution their second win of the season.

Frantic but Scoreless

With both teams hungry for points, the pace was frantic for the opening minutes. The Revolution played out of the back, but could not advance for a shot in the first fifteen minutes. Meanwhile, the Red Bulls had three solid attempts in the same time frame, including a set piece shot from Daniel Royer. There was also a strong shot from Marc Rzatkowski a few minutes before the halftime break. Even after the pace settled, the ball remained heavily in the middle of the park. While New England held most of the possession, New York were the greater threat.

Casseres a standout

After tallying an assist against Sporting Kansas City on Sunday, Cristian Casseres Jr. made another appearance in the Red Bulls lineup in Foxboro. He cemented his spot in the starting XI during his entire shift on the field. The Revs identified Casseres as a threat, and he suffered multiple fouls as a result. He was eventually substituted in the 70th minute by Derrick Etienne, Jr.

Stronger Second Half

Both teams came back from the break better prepared for what was ahead. The Revs kept the ball in the attacking third, but still came up empty. Diego Fagundez looked to open the scoring, but it curled over the net. RBNY needed a new option, and manager Chris Armas brought in Omir Fernandez. But it was the New England sub Cristian Penilla who finally broke through in the 75th minute. He was able to outrun Aaron Long to send a shot in past captain Luis Robles. Armas sent in Andreas Ivan to offer another attacking option. Ivan shot into the side of the net in the 84th minute. While they tried to keep their attack going, the whistle blew and ended the possibility of saving a point. The Red Bulls return to Harrison to try expansion team FC Cincinnatti.
