Lucas Rodriguez Golazo Leads D.C. United Past Colorado Rapids 3-2

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (April 13, 2019) – D.C. United has had a rough week. A red card and a blowout at home followed by a lackluster draw on Tuesday had the club in poor spirits going into this weekend. The Black and Red got back on track on Saturday night at Colorado Rapids. Lucas Rodriguez led the way.

Having had their Wednesday game canceled, the Rapids came out fresh and focused. Kei Kamara and Diego Rubio had several chances with the Rapids midfield dictating the pace. Benny Feilhaber opened the scoring in the 11th minute off a corner. Jack Price sent the cross to Tommy Smith, who headed it towards goal. Feilhaber gathered the ball then scored past goalkeeper Bill Hamid, who was closing in.

United took a half hour to get settled but found their mojo. Like the first Rapids goal, this came off a corner. After two deflections in the box, the ball fell Luciano Acosta chested the ball down, ran to change the shooting lane, then scored.

They took the lead just three minutes later. Rodrguiez collected a pass from up field, turn perfectly into space. He found Chris Durkin on the flank who scored on Howards, shooting across goal and inside the far post.

Rodriguez scored an MLS Goal of the Week candidate in the 43rd minute. The Argentine ran straight up the middle, blowing past the center backs, then poked the ball just before goalkeeper Tim Howard tripped him up. The half ended 3-1.

Kamara got pulled the Rapids within one in the 66th minute. Unmarked, he headed a cross into the back of the net from inside the six yard box. Feilhaber provided the service from the touch line.

Three Takeaways:

Unlikely heroes get DCU a win: Wayne Rooney returned to the lineup after missing Tuesday’s game for suspension. Acosta tied the game up but it was the supporting cast that completed the comeback. Durkin scored his first goal of the year while Rodriguez had a goal and an assist.

Center back marking plagues Colorado: The defense continued to be a problem for the Rapids. No one got to the ball on the first goal. Then Tommy Smith got blown by on the other two goals. Kofi Opare didn’t cover himself in glory on the Rodriguez goal either.

Kamara continues to eat: The one constant this year for Colorado has been that Kamara makes stuff happen when he gets the ball. Every time he got the ball in the second half, he created danger. His goal was deserved for the shift he put in.
