Bridgeview, Illinois (April 12, 2019) — David Ousted was a member of the Vancouver Whitecaps for five seasons. He donned the colors of the Whitecaps from 2013-17, earning his spot as starting goalkeeper all five seasons.
However, after five years, the Whitecaps decided to move on. For Ousted, he was on the hunt for a new club for the first time since 2012. Ousted spent one season with D.C. United, which wasn’t up to par. However, this past offseason, Ousted was given another chance by the Chicago Fire.
David Ousted gives up gaffe goal against former team, Vancouver
The 34-year-old goalkeeper isn’t getting any younger. He showed that on Friday night when he faced against his former team at the home of his new club.
Ousted gave up a goal early in the second half. In an attempt to cover the ball, Ousted let the ball slip out of his hands. Possession then fell to Vancouver, as the ball fell to the feet of Yordy Reyna, who blasted it into the empty net. Vancouver took the lead, but late in the match it didn’t matter.
Reyna’s teammate on the defensive side, Doneil Henry, gave up a penalty kick to the Fire. Henry was called for a handball in the penalty area. After checking with VAR, referee Jair Marrufo ruled that Chicago could indeed take the penalty. Nemanja Nikolic smacked the penalty past Vancouver’s new goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau.
Crepeau was able to keep the match even later on, with a late save against C.J. Sapong.
The end result gives each team a point in the standings. After surprisingly drawing with the Seattle Sounders FC, the Whitecaps fell to the Galaxy last weekend. The season has been a rollercoaster so far for the Whitecaps. For the Fire, they continue a three-match unbeaten run.

Three Takeaways
- Goalkeeper battle shows that Crepeau is the real deal: It’s not that David Ousted is a bad goalkeeper, but Father Time is definitely catching up to him. Vancouver would have earned the win if it wasn’t for a silly penalty conceded by Henry. Crepeau made five really stellar saves against the Fire. Meanwhile, Ousted gave up a gaffe goal and got lucky with a penalty.
- A draw was deserved: Neither team deserved to win that match and that’s mainly based on the first half. The giveaways by both sides in the first half was insane. There were moments where it seemed like neither team had possession for more than 10 seconds.
- Bastian Schweinsteiger looks comfortable as a CB: After spending many years in the midfield, German legend Bastian Schweinsteiger looked comfortable playing the centerback role. He had a rough time orchestrating clearances, but once he got a few minutes into the match, he settled. It was a good showing between him and his fellow centerback Marcelo.

What’s Next?
For the Fire: The Fire have a decent break, waiting eight days until they feature against Colorado Rapids on April 20. That match will begin at 1 p.m. ET.
For the Whitecaps: It’s a bit of a quicker turn-around for the Whitecaps. This coming Wednesday, the Whitecaps will suit up against Los Angeles FC for a Western Conference tilt. LAFC is currently on top of the Western Conference with 16 points. Held at B.C. Place, the match will begin at 10 p.m. ET.
