New York City, New York (March 10, 2019) — Sean Johnson and Bill Hamid had a busy Sunday afternoon in net. The New York City FC goalkeeper and D.C. United goalkeeper, respectively, combined for nine saves in a scoreless draw.
Johnson was the less busier of the two, only having to stop three shots. Meanwhile, Hamid was busy at Yankee Stadium, making six saves. On offense, both sides felt each other out for the first 30 minutes of the match. However, a huge save by Johnson against Luciano Acosta set the tone for the match.
NYCFC, D.C. United have a goalkeeper affair with scoreless draw
The Sunday afternoon tilt because a goalkeeper affair with acrobatic saves left and right.
Meanwhile, New York City FC held dominance throughout the match. NYCFC kept possession of the ball for about 66 percent of the match. New York players also accounted for 21 shots, with the six on goal.
Alexandru Mitrita led New York City FC with six total shots, but Alexander Ring wasn’t far behind. Ring accounted for four shots, blasting two from outside of the box. However, nothing could get past Hamid.
On the D.C. United side, only two players took shots throughout the match. Paul Arriola and Acosta totaled two shots each. Acosta’s attempt was the highlight of D.C. United’s chances.
This is the second straight draw for New York City FC. Last weekend, the club drew 2-2 with Orlando City SC. Meanwhile, D.C. United’s draw is essentially deemed a drop-off, after beating reigning MLS champions, Atlanta United FC, last weekend.
However, next week, New York will look for their first victory. Staying at Yankee Stadium, New York City FC will host Los Angeles FC at 3 p.m. ET on March 17. Meanwhile, D.C. United will take on Real Salt Lake on Saturday, returning to Audi Field for a 8 p.m. ET match.
