Kansas City, Kan.- Rodney Wallace and Sporting KC have agreed to terms on a one year contract. The Costa Rican Winger has scored 26 goals and assisted on 33 others. Wallace was a free agent after his contract option was declined by NYCFC.

Sporting KC interestingly mentioned him as a left back in their release, and that’s exactly how they’ll plan to employ him. Per Sam Stejskal’s report, they anticipate him pushing Sinovic for the left back starting spot.

Wallace played as a left back earlier in his career, making 9 appearances there with the timbers. He made more appearances there most recently in his stint with Sporting Recife in Brazil. He has three goals and an assist from the position.

Sporting KC lost out on depth at the left back position in 2018 after both Cristian Lobato and Jimmy Medranda endured season ending injuries at the beginning of the summer. With Lobato not returning, and Medranda being out until the summer, Wallace will fill a serious need at left back, while still providing some versatility in wing selections as well.

Sporting KC is a passionate club that knows how to win,” Wallace said via Press Release. “There are a lot of key aspects here to winning, from the players and staff to the facilities and fans. The soccer atmosphere in Kansas City gives the team that extra edge, and I am excited to come here and be a part of something special.”

It’s also safe to say that Peter Vermes is happy with the signing as well.

“Rodney has strong qualities as a soccer player and the type of mentality that we always search for,” Vermes said via press release. “He is incredibly competitive and can impact the game with and without the ball. I see him fitting into our team really quickly, and I’m extremely excited to add someone of his caliber to our roster.”

Sporting KC also announced that they’ve acquired Erik Hurtado in a trade. Vancouver would receive Sporting’s Second Round pick in 2020, and First round pick in 2021.

Hurtado is a pretty quick forward who doesn’t have a whole lot to show for in terms of goal scoring ability. He has just 17 goals and 13 assists in over 120 appearances. However, he’s only been handed a start in a third of his appearances. But, depth is depth, and that’s all that you can ask for.
