In the final Hudson River Derby of the regular season, New York City FC hosted the New York Red Bulls. The New York sides played to a draw in a match filled with action and tension.

Bradley Wright-Phillips 200th Career Goal

In the 37th minute, RBNY striker Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his 200th career goal. He has played nearly 500 matches in his career, between England and the US. His header in front of the net caught NYC goalkeeper Sean Johnson off guard. Wright-Phillips has now scored twelve goals against NYC, the most against any of his opponents in his career.

Red Cards Hinder NYC

During the first half, NYC midfielder Eloi Amagat was issued a red card following a foul on RBNY midfielder Marc Rzatkowski. The Red Bulls were unable to capitalize on the advantage for the remainder of the half. Despite being down a man, NYC leveled the match early in the second half. David Villa took advantage of a stretched defense and slotted the ball past Red Bull goalkeeper Luis Robles in the 52nd minute.

The situation worsened in the second half for the home team with the ejection of Ebenezer Ofori, following a hard foul on Wright-Phillips. But NYC was able to step up and hold on to the draw despite being down two men. There were a total of six yellow cards issued during the game as tempers flared and confusion reigned.

NYC captain Villa earned a card for dissent in the course of stating the case following Ofori’s sending off. This was followed by a yellow for Kemar Lawrence for a push that sent Andre Tinnerholm to ground.

Shared Points

Although a number of chances were made by Derrick Etienne, Jr., Daniel Royer, and Andreas Ivan, the Red Bulls could not score a needed second goal. Even with seven minutes of stoppage time that became nearly eight, head referee Ted Unkel blew the whistle and the game ended as a draw. NYCFC get to rest this weekend, while RBNY end Rivalry Week hosting their historic rivals DC United.
