In their first match after the World Cup break, the New York Red Bulls hosted FC Dallas in league play. Currently fourth in the Eastern Conference, RBNY needed to return to form following elimination from the U.S. Open Cup. Daniel Royer received a straight red card in the 25th minute and was sent off. Aaron Long and Kemar Lawrence scored to maintain control of the game.

Daniel Royer Send-off Shifts Game Balance for the New York Red Bulls

During a battle for the ball in the 23rd minute, midfielder Tyler Adams recovered and headed for the endline. His cross to Bradley Wright-Philips was a virtual tap-in to open the scoring. But the jubilation was short-lived. Royer was initially booked for violent conduct and issued a yellow card in the 25th minute. The call was then sent to the Video Assisted Referee and then called a straight red offense. The Red Bulls were forced to play with the disadvantage up until the 90th minute, when Dallas defender Reto Ziegler was also sent off with a straight red. RBNY faltered in possession (46 percent) and pass accuracy (77 percent) with Royer’s absence. Central defenders Aaron Long and Tim Parker kept FC Dallas striker Maximiliano Urruti from completing chances given to him. He was the top shot taker for FC Dallas with five (two on frame).

Defenders Impress to Secure Game

While Wright-Phillips is often on the scorecard, defenders Long (40′) and Kemar Lawrence (48′) stepped up to keep the Red Bulls on top despite being down a man. Long made himself available on a corner kick from Sean Davis, but the goal was in danger of being called back by VAR. Upon review, there were no issues with Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez’s line of sight and the goal was upheld. This was only Long’s second goal for the season. Lawrence opened his account for the year with a shot off a cross from Alejandro “Kaku” Romero Gamarra that found the back of the net.

Substitutions Reinforced Attack

The second half began with a 4-4-1 formation from RBNY out of necessity. But instead of bunkering in, the team was able to maintain their style of play, leading to the goal from Lawrence. When the time came to make changes, Marsch opted for attackers, bringing in Alex Muyl and Derrick Etienne, Jr.  Defender Aurelien Collin was brought in to shore up the defense very late in the game, replacing Florian Valot. Captain and goalkeeper Luis Robles was credited with six saves on the day.

The Red Bulls head to BMO field to face defending champions Toronto FC next Sunday.
