HOUSTON, TEXAS (May 27, 2018) — The Houston Dash won some and lost some on Sunday night in Texas.

While the Dash claimed three points in a 3-2 victory over the Washington Spirit, the club lost one of their most solid players.

Midfielder Kristie Mewis has been ruled out for the rest of the season. The Dash called her injury a “left knee sprain.” Mewis was treated at the Houston Methodist Hospital.

Houston Dash Win Over Washington Spirit Tempered by Kristie Mewis Injury

The 27-year-old midfielder featured in all 11 matches for Houston this season, scoring two goals. She totaled 919 minutes this season.

Mewis left the pitch in the 19th minute. She originally went down with injury in the 12th minute. A replay later showed that the injury was a non-contact injury.

However, after seven minutes of attempted action, Mewis called to be substituted off. Taking her place in the midfield was Haley Hanson.

After Mewis’ injury, the goals starting piling up.

Houston took the lead before the halftime whistle blew. Nichelle Prince found Rachel Daly in the box, who slipped a shot past Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe.

Immediately after the second half began, Kealia Ohai found the back of Bledsoe’s net in the 46th minute.

Washington then cut Houston’s lead in half. Argentina forward Estefanía Banini scored in the 54th minute on a goal assisted by Taylor Smith.

Houston re-took control of the match with another goal from Daly in the 78th minute. Daly’s goal was assisted by forward Thembi Kgatlana.

Washington had one last-ditch effort from Ashley Hatch in second-half stoppage time. However, Washington could not push for the equalizing goal.

Houston’s victory moves the club up to fifth place in the NWSL with 13 points. Meanwhile, Washington sits in eighth place with eight points.

She has helped keep us positive through tough times, taught the rookies how to manage this league, valued and respected the staff and squad in ways no one could of ever imagined, leaded from back to front, and more importantly been the absolute rock.
