Expanded Bracket

For the 2019 tournament, CONCACAF has widened the field to sixteen participants. The first six teams have already been selected due to their participation in the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers. The hexagonal participants were: United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama, and Trinidad & Tobago. The ten remaining teams will be selected through the Nations League qualifying rounds. There are 32 teams contending for those ten spots. The teams will be decided by March 2019.

Cup and Club Ties

Red Bulls Assistant Coach Chris Armas was on hand to speak about his own Gold Cup experience. A two-time Gold Cup participant, Armas played at Red Bull Arena in the 2005 tournament. He recounted the game against Panama and the quality of the arena. “The field dimensions and ground quality are second to none,” Armas noted.

RBNY defender Kemar Lawrence, in attendance today, played in the 2017 Gold Cup final for the Jamaican national team. Jamaica lost 2-1 to the United States after defeating Mexico in a stunning semi-final. Also in attendance were USMNT midfielder Tyler Adams and Panamanian Internationals Michael Amir Murillo and Fidel Escobar. Murillo and Escobar leave for the 2018 World Cup in Russia this month.

Looking Back and Looking Ahead

Following the press conference, Adams and Lawrence spoke of their national team experiences. “I have the opportunity…as long as I keep playing well,” Adams said of his chances to make a Gold Cup appearance for the US. Adams has 3 caps with the senior team following advancement through the ranks with the US Youth National Teams.

The players also spoke about the upcoming match against sophomore MLS club Atlanta United. Lawrence is confident as the team heads south: “Tactics are clear, everyone is clear, the team is fresh.” They play at the new Mercedes-Benz stadium on Sunday.
